The fifth anniversary of one of the saddest days in the history of The Cauldron is almost upon us. If you were a member of The Cauldron any time from about 2003 to early 2006, you will remember Chavi (aka Storyteller Cat and, in offline life, Cathlene Patricia McKenna) and starting in early 2005, her ever positive reports on her battle with a rare form of cancer. (You can read some of those posts here on our slow 2005 Archive Board.) The odds were against her from the beginning, but that did not stop her from fighting hard to try to be one of the rare survivors. And for a time it looked like she really might overcome those long odds. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be so.

Elspeth, one of the founders of this board passed over on April 19th last year, after years of fighting congestive heart failure and other medical problems which kept her offline except for generally brief spells over the last five or six years. She was a major participant here in the early years of this board and her posts can be found on our old Delphi forum and our old archive boards. Some of her poetry and other writings can in old issues of our newsletter and in the Samhain section of our web site. The Cauldron would have never started if Elspeth had not wanted a forum to replace a small mailing list, The Grove, which she ran.

Friday, April 1, 2011, marks the fifth anniversary of Chavi's passing. It's been half a decade now and TC is still not the same without her. For the past four years, we have honored her on April 1st with 24 hours of candle burning. We've will be continuing the tradition this year, except that we will also be honoring Elspeth. We are asking all Cauldron members who knew Chavi or Elspeth, knew of Chavi or Elspeth, or who did not know either Chavi or Elspeth but just want to help honor two wonderful people who meant a lot to many members of TC (and wish to participate) to light a candle in honor of Chavi and Elspeth at 8pm your local time on April 1st and let it burn for at least an hour. The object is to have 24 hours of candles burning for them -- one hour at a time around the world. Given things like oceans and the like, this may not be completely possible, but I'll bet we can come close -- especially as some of us let our candles burn for longer than one hour.

If you want to participate, please post in here. Everyone, regardless of religion, is welcome to participate.  If you can't participate at 8pm your time, feel free to pick a different hour, I can promise you that neither Chavi or Elspeth would have been sticklers about the time.

I'll be there.  That is the date of my next surgery and since I share some of the health issues Elspeth had I will definitely be thinking of her as well as Chavi.  DH has promised to light my candle for me if I'm not home yet.

I would like to participate. I generally burn those candles in the glass containers that burn for days so they'll definately be covered on my part and then some. I also generally do these type of rituals that take extended time in the morning upon waking up, so if it's alright, I'll start April first in the morning (unless I happen to be awake at midnight which is quite possible and I'll do it to make them completely covered and then some.

I will certainly be participating - I'll be back in Calgary by then so I'll be on MDT, and will burn my candle for them at least from 8-9, and as much additional time on either side of that as I can.

I sadly never got to meet the people you speak off because i simply wasn't around then... as a matter during that time i wasn't even reborn yet...

All i can say is that everyone who fights a deadly disease like cancer or CHF is a warrior, and should they lose the fight it is a tragedy, but they die a warriors death.

The two people you speak of are both in the highest place they could posibly arive. They have become something many mortals strive to achieve in life but can never... they have become eternal. This doesn't make the loss any less severe, or the pain any less real however.

Even though i never had the pleasure of meeting these two people, i will light two candles at my altar in their remembrance. As i honor people who fought bravely, wether it was against an outside enemy by sword and spear. Or their own bodies, with bravery and strength.

Even though i did not meet them.

Hail to Chavi and Elspeth, who fought till the final breath... Warriors.

Eerm, Randall? 1st April 2011 falls on Friday?

Either way, I'll be lighting candles for them both.

I fixed that. I don't know how I typed Thursday while looking at a Friday on the wall calendar next to my monitor. I guess I really can typo anything. Sad Thanks for noticing the problem.

I would like to participate, too.

I normally use colored candles. Do you know what their favorite colors were?
