This is (obviously) for those who aren't on a path previously named. Wink I'm just curious, was there anything that really led you to name your path in the first place? Is there a deep meaning behind the name, or was it just what sounded nice at the time? Probably more importantly, how long did it take for you to name your path? Did you 'angst' over the name, wanting it to be just right, or did it just come to you?

Mostly general curiosity at work here, with nothing deep driving the question. Smiley

I don't remember much angst- it developed pretty organically. I named it Conair an Cheo, Irish Gaelic for Path of Mist, because mist is a very liminal thing, and it helps me balance my spirituality in a concrete world. For a long time I called it the path of mist simply because I felt like I was trying to build a bridge out of mist when I was codifying my beliefs and thoughts into a coherent path. Either way, it seems appropriate.

Boy, I can relate to that! It's a neat name, by the way. Smiley

I think it's a pretty universal feeling, right along with the blank stare when you know what you want to say, but you can't for the life of you figure out how to say it. And thanks Cheesy I'm pretty fond of it.

Does that feeling ever go away? ? ? ?

And it is a good name - I like it too Smiley

For myself... I don't have one... but I have a feeling it'll come... one day... maybe this century, maybe next...

Yes and no. Cheesy I find it's easier to just not think too hard about it- eventually, it'll work itself out in your head, and you'll get it written down.

I got sick of not having a name.  I realized that it was something on its own, that it didn't match what I'd found in other places.  And I use the metaphor of flame for spirit, so, Keeping the Sacred Flame of the spirit - FlameKeeping. Smiley

some angst, mostly just wanting a label.  I never expected other people would adopt it too. Cheesy

I thought that giving it a name would make it, well, official, in a way. It would point me in the right direction for progress, but more importantly, it would embody what I had already discovered about my path. However, since I know that words are important, and names definitely so, I had (and still kind of am having) a bit of difficulty.

Since my path is primarily based around story, and poetry, I started out calling it The Poet's Path. Simple enough. Then I decided I wanted it to be in Irish, because Irish always sounds so much nicer than English (Tongue) and my path is heavily influenced by Irish practices and beliefs. Since I'm no Irish speaker, I had a hard time trying to figure out how to translate, and then I decided that The Poet's Path wasn't... it completely. I thought about Filídecht, but then thought that perhaps that was a bit pretentious, as it would imply that I followed a more reconstructionistic path, which is not exactly true.

Then I found the word Filíocht, which means "poetry", and decided that was an all right start. So now I call it Filíocht--The Poet's Path when I'm feeling wordy, and just "the path" when I'm not.  Wink

I've been walking my path for almost 4 years now, and have yet to come up with an acceptable name for it.  Like many others, I'd love to name it, but I think it's still too early.  I feel like I have so much more to learn before I can adequately label the path that I walk.  Since my beliefs are so eclectic, I have a hard time even explaining it to anyone when asked.  Maybe it'll never have a name, and I guess that would be okay.  Smiley

I've drifted far away from it now, but I used to be on a self-named path.  More or less...  kind of sort of.  I came up with a name because I wanted a way to describe myself and the journey I was on.  It wasn't that it was hugely important, I guess, it just seemed like the thing to do.  Cheesy  I borrowed stuff from other people and cobbled it together:  Squishy Indie Pagan.  (I later added Agnostic to the beginning of it, I think, and then toward the end I think even that got some sort of modifier like "Maybe" or something before I gave up and moved on to descriptions including increasing amounts of credit to Hellenic Paganism.)  "Squishy" I took from someone on the alt.callahans newsgroup (I think the name was kitten), and used it as the opposite of "firm"--that is, I wasn't firmly rooted anywhere.  "Indie" I borrowed from a poster here at TC (Haruka, who sadly hasn't been around much lately) to indicate a high degree of doing my own thing.

Well, I started with simply "Walking the Paths" because that's what it felt like doing, but I chose Silver to differentiate my Path and those who agree with me from others.  *shrug*  It felt right.  I suppose I was mildly inspired by Mercedes Lackey's Moonpaths.

I call myself a "Wandering Seeker with Celtic and Hedgewitch Leanings" because that's exactly what I am.  I don't follow any of the established paths so that brings in "Wandering Seeker". I'm also drawn to Celtic Gods and Goddesses, hence the "Celtic" part of my path. I also enjoy gardenning and learning about medicinal herbs and cooking herbs so that brings in "Hedgewitch" and, since nothing's concrete yet, the "Leanings".  Smiley

I hope that's understandable...I'm on vicodin right now due to a gall bladder attack so I apologize if I've not made sense.   Cheesy
