I've hit a ceiling with what I can do, energy-wise. I'm in need of a few exercises or ideas to help me improve. I believe I've covered most of the "basics"; raising, shielding, throwing it at people (and I mean that in the best of ways), grounding, and pretty accurately moving it around my body.

My friend raises her energy by drawing it from her surroundings. I'm interested in trying that, if anyone has any suggestions.

Really, any tips at all would be helpful!

(I don't often have board anxiety, but if this is the wrong one, do forgive)

Gosh, I wish I had that problem. I usually can't feel energy until it whacks me with a two-by-four! Grin

Have you tried 'shaping' the energy, either with your hands or in your mind? I keep imagining being able to construct a spiritual/mental altar where you can do work without physical tools.

Diana Paxson's book _Trance-portation_ has some of the better exercises I've seen.

Other things to try:
- drawing energy from and grounding energy into different physical elements (a tree, a rock, running water, a lake, a bit of earth, a fire, a breeze, a piece of music, a piece of art, etc.)

- working with other people (which, really, is energy 201 in a lot of ways, because you have to negotiate the difference between their perceptions of energy and yours, which tends to hone your skills fast.) This can be energy exercises, or it can be ritual work where multiple people are combining their energies.

- trying different approaches: for example, if you normally base your shields on a visual mode, try something kinesthetic, or audio based. If you normally do big-bulky-study, try doing something more delicate and subtle. Basically, expand your range of options. (Reading fiction where magic is a part of the world is actually a good way to get some ideas here about general approaches/things to try.)

I have a pretty good deal of success using energy a bit like a ribbon going about my body. That is the one thing I have to work on, as it likes to go extremely fast and in odd shapes, where as I want it to be slower and uniform. That's the only shaping I really do, however. I think I might try the altar, as my "mental" places mean a great deal to me.

I can think of ways to apply all of your ideas, thank you. I currently only know one person who does energy work, but we're close friends, so if she's up for it I think we might be able to work something out. And I haven't read any good fiction in quite some time... I think I might just go do that.

On the fiction: some titles that have gotten me thinking along different energetic lines in the past. Tanya Huff's Four Quarters series is an interesting place to start. Katherine Kurtz's Deryni books. (For that matter, her Adept series). Bits of Mercedes Lackey and early Laurel K. Hamilton. Charles de Lint. Emma Bull's _War for the Oaks_.  Robin McKinley's _Chalice_ has some great stuff. Bunches of others: basically, anything with a reasonably thoroughly designed magical system.
