Hi,

I am writing a research paper on pre-Christian society and the various forms of paganism of the different peoples.

I am writing about the Norse, the Celts, the Romans, and the Gallic people.

Does anyone know any good books written as from a historical point of view that I can cite for references?

Thanks!

I suspect you will get quite a bit of help, but folks will need to know a bit more, like what level of school (high school? college?) the paper is for.

Is the only one I can think of that covers most of Europe, I don't have a copy of, I'm sorry, but maybe some other members might.

Maybe try Hilda Ellis Davidson?  She has at least a couple of books on paganism of Northern Europe.

Thats an interesting subject Vargstenen what are you doing the paper for?

For proper history I know Ronald hutton is an historian and his book on Druidry "Blood and mistletoe" casts an historical eye over an historical celtic druidry (very briefly its not the main topic). For celtic society with a basic indoeuropean context you could try Pagan Past and Christian Present in Early Irish literature by Kim McCone.

If you can narrow the spectrum a bit to a particular part of pre christian life I might be able to recommend something better (though both are great books for the topic). If you can do a timeline too itd be handy. What are you going to use as a pre/post christian land mark?

A History of Pagan Europe by Jones and Pennick is an excellent overview of all those cultures.
