I'm looking to get into a deeper study of the ancient Greek mystery cults (Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphism primarily, but if I'm missing others, any pointers are welcome), and I would appreciate reading material suggestions.

What I have found by searching on my own:
- Dudley Wright, Eleusinian Mysteries and Rites
- Thomas Taylor, The Eleusinian and Bacchic Mysteries
- J.R. Watmough, Orphism
- William Keith Chambers Guthrie, Orpheus and Greek Religion: A study of the Orphic movement
- Miguel Herrero de Jauregui, Helicon to Sion: Orpheus and Christianity in late antiquity

Feel free to add to the list, or even take away, if something is a no-no. Thanks in advance!

I haven't read it myself, but Walter Burkert's Ancient Mystery Cults should probably be on your list.

It's a great book, unless you are looking for information on a specific cult. Burkert takes a more general approach.

I'd recommend Ritual Texts for the Afterlife: Orpheus and the Bacchic Gold Tablets by Fritz Graf and Sarah Iles Johnston. You might be better off finding it at a university library than purchasing it, since it's a pretty expensive book (at least for me it was, anyways). I've only read a bit into it, but I've seen it highly recommended.

Hello there,

You could take a look at:

The Road to Eleusis: Unveiling the Secret of the Mysteries- R. Gordon Wasson, Carl A. P. Ruck and Albert Hofmann
Eleusis and the Eleusinian Mysteries- George E. Mylonas
Dionysus: Myth and Cult- Walter F. Otto
Mysteries of Demeter : Rebirth of the Pagan Way- Jennifer Reif (Though this isn't an academic text and is more of a "How to" book on creating a modern cult of Demeter based upon her mysteries, still might be worth a look)

Interestingly, on Amazon.co.uk, it's going for £19.99 new from them, from £16.86 new from other sellers, and from £29.98 used! Huh I mean, wtf?

Ah well. The preview on Google Books is almost 200 pages. Grin
