What I mean is...
When one contacts you and you don't know who it is...How do you question them? Do you just meditate and ask questions? How does that work?

I'm very curious. Is it different for everyone. I keep reading about people being "touched" by one.
I find that fascinating.

Hehe I'll answer this.  When I reach out to the Haltija, I can do a few different things.  Last week I made a circle in the pine needles, sat down, and invited them to come to my circle if they wanted to while I meditated and then played my ocarina for them.  They seemed to appreciate it, but didn't come very close.  I them moved deeper into the forest upon this hill that I feel they are the most active on.  There are thousands of clovers everywhere, and it's very green and fresh.  I offered them sweet berry candy that I brought with me as an offering of friendship to them.  I can always feel them at that spot...hiding in the leaves, dancing on the breeze, rustling through the grass and clovers.

To ask them questions, I would suggest either meditation, a trance, or you could just ground yourself and relax, and then casually carry out a conversation with them.  I have done all but the trance yet, but if you want to really connect with spirits a shamanic trance is a wonderful way to do so.

First and foremost, do what feels natural in that certain situation.  For beginning though, if you sense that these spirits are near I would causiously approach their land and ask if you are allowed to step in.  If you get a good feeling or answer, you may proceed.  I would thank them, and at this point I usually have a small offering ready for them.  I'd give that, and then sit down and either meditate or just talk to them.  Sometimes I just sit there and take all of my surrounding in.  You can do many, many things to approach them and these are only a few.  Everyone will have their different opinion, but since I work with land spirits frequently I found that these work very well.

Yes, if you ever get that kind of feeling it would be best to just get outta there!  Even saying "Sorry for coming too close, I'll respect your bounderies" would be a good idea to make sure they don't follow you.  I've gotten that feeling only a few times, though.

I'm glad. Smiley And most spirits generally appriciate any attention they can get these days.  They used to be honored in many cultures DAILY by nearly EVERYBODY.  Now, not many people even believe they exist.  It's good to have them on your side, and I think that those who don't even believe in them are missing out on a wonderful experience in life.  Remember though, that not all spirits will want to connect with you so readily!  So take caution, be polite like you're entering someone else's home and trust your intuition.  I think respect it the absolute most important thing when it comes to contacting the spirits. I find that fascinating.
I've had two kinds of experiences with this; one that I control and one that I have no say over. The first is when I wish to reach out to my deities I follow, mostly Hecate. I meditate or find a place where I wont be disturbed and reach out to her mentally. I essentially say in my mind "Are you near? I need guidance." Sometimes I will be answered with absolutely nothing, sometimes I get a very warm, welcoming feeling. The warm feeling is when I know she is there and listening. I will explain my situation and ask whatever question I feel I need an answer to. I don't really hear words from her, but I get strong feelings of which way is the right way to go. Of course, I always try to light a candle in offering to her when I do this.

The second method, which I have no control over, is in my dreams. If I am ignoring what someone is trying to tell me, they tend to approach me in my dreams. A recent example of this was when I was teetering on the decision of whether or not to get back into my "pagan arts". Everything was saying "yes", but I wasn't hearing it. Finally, I was approached by a messenger (who this messenger was, I'll never know as they refused to tell me their name, but I will be forever grateful to them) in my dreams. They sat me down and out right said "You need to pick up your cards and pendulum again."

The dreams thing happens very rarely, but I do often reach out to the deities I follow in the way I described in method 1. Sometimes I'll reach out to them when I'm doing everyday tasks, like Hestia. I just like to feel the connectedness when I'm going around cleaning my home or what-have-you.
