I was reading one of the threads on here and I came across someone who brought up this term.

...does that still happen? I'm sure in some rural parts of the country where there aren't a lot of open minded people it could. It's just hard for me to wrap my mind around it. I mean, sure persecution happens every day. To people of different races, different colors, different sexualities, and even different religions.

I wonder...I was talking to one of the Witches who own an occult shop here in my city and she warned me about people who still persecute witches. Is there a group or something out there that's still hardcore devoted to hunting us?

I'm on the right track, baby.

There are actual witch hunts going on in places like Nigeria, but that has nothing to do with western Neopagans.

Frankly, you are far more likely to be a target for violence or harassment if you're a woman, or GLBTQ, or a gender non-conformist, or a person of color -- any kind of visible minority.

That's not to say that Neopagans don't face harassment and persecution, because it definitely happens, and the shop owner you spoke to may have had to deal with vandalism, paperwork that mysteriously goes "missing," etc.  And Pat Robertson types are fond of fulminating against Pagans in general (along with feminists, Muslims, gay people, etc.).  But a lot of the crap that Neopagans may have to deal with ties into broader issues of Christian hegemony that disprivilege those who are not Christian, but they tend to be more subtle.

I was reading one of the threads on here and I came across someone who brought up this term.

In addition to what Catja said:  The term "witch hunt" is also commonly used as a metaphor for a particular hostile and accusatory mindset of society, without necessarily meaning to indicate that actual witches (or people believed to be actual witches, I should say) are involved.

I know they have a lot of spirit hunts or "Ghost" hunts but definitely not witch hunts. This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about
