I didn't want to clog up the blog request thread so I created this one, mods/ptb feel free to move this as appropriate if necessary.

I've noticed several of us have blogs on blogspot and several have blogs on wordpress. I'm not very happy w/blogspot at the moment. It's been acting erratically and is difficult to customize but I have zero experience with wordpress. Would any of you reccomend one over the other? I'll leave my business/pop culture blog as is but I'd like a better set up for my spiritual blog. Thoughts?

Personally I am all for Wordpress.
I tried Blogger and it is inconvenient compared to WP.

With WP you have to take a look around, to see where everything is, but after that it is easy.
And they have a bazillion of free themes that can be custumized to one extent or another.

But that's just me, I am biased hier. Wink

I started on Blogger, but now do most of my blogging on Wordpress.  Blogger isn't always reliable, as it's proven over the last few days with sporadic service. WP took me more time to learn than Blogger, but it was really worth it.

Thanks for the input Smiley I've 'parked' the same name as my current blog on Wordpress and plan to check it out further. For now I'm sticking with blogspot simply because it's familiar and I'm weirdly motivated to rattle on about DP topics Smiley I'll investigate transferring them while I snuffle on wordpress. It does appear to be more complex than blogspot but I think that will be a benefit. I've wanted to stab blogspot in it's metaphorical throat all week Smiley

If you host your own installation, yes - the Wordpress.com version (that they host) doesn't allow it except for very high-traffic sites (http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/) but there's lots of options for people who self-host.

I self-host using WP, but otherwise I use Blogger. I'm not a big fan of the Wordpress.com stuff, because there don't seem to be as many customizations. You can choose a free theme but beyond that, there's not much you can tweak. With Blogger's most recent version, you have a lot more options for how you can design and customize the look of your blog, including being able to access the CSS directly (something I don't think you can do with the free Wordpress.com version, though obviously you can with self-hosted WP sites).

Also, the reason Blogger has been down recently is because they're in the process of rolling out a massive overhaul to their entire system, which will keep or improve most of their good features while changing some of their less stellar features to be more like Wordpress.com. It's the largest overhaul on their system (including user interface and dashboard) that they've ever done. From what I've seen, it looks like after the overhaul, they'll have the best of both worlds.... But that remains to be seen, since their recent maintenance did cause such a big problem.

All that said, if you're self-hosting, WP is definitely the way to go. I built my website using WP and couldn't be happier with it. There are a lot of things you can do when self-hosting with WP that you just can't do with Blogger (but then, most of those you can't do with the free Wordpress.com version, either). Plus, I like supporting WP more than feeding the huge Google monster anyway. Wink

Just my 2¢

Interesting, I wasn't aware any maintenance was occurring. I'm going to stick w/blogger for now anyway as I've already done quite a bit of work for both blogs there and can't be bothered to transfer (yet at any rate), thanks for the information Smiley

I prefer wordpress, but I'm no computer/Internet wiz, and couldn't really tell you any of the technical differences between the two. All I know is that I often just go with what is more familiar and appeals to me the most. I'd check out the layouts/features of both, and see which one you're more drawn to. If you have zero experience with wordpress, but have used blogspot/blogger more often, then perhaps it might be best to just stick with what feels more familiar...however, wordpress does give you the option to delete a blog, so if you wanted to try it out first, you could always get rid of it if wordpress ended up not working out for you.

Good luck!

I have two blogs. One Wordpress and one Blogger and I prefer Blogger though I'm not quite sure why! I'll have to think about it and try and figure it out... I certainly feel like I have more ways to customise the theme I have on Blogger, but maybe I have just missed something on WP.

The recent probs with Blogger didn't bother me unduly and I just waited them out, several people who've been blogging much longer than me have said it's the only major incident they've known.

This is one of the reasons Lyric moved all her blogs to a Wordpress site we host: http://gridlines.net/. Although I suspect the new Blogger will be very nice once the update is finished and all the bugs the update introduces are fixed.

I've only used Wordpress.  It's relatively easy to use, so I've stuck with that one.  I tried to use LJ once and ran away screaming...

Oh man I DESPISE LJ, it's search function is basically non-existent, seriously I don't understand why it's still around. My guess is it's got a load of archived info people are still interested in. Everything to do with it is awkward and clunky, from customizing your page to finding information and linking posts. Yeesh.

My personal blogging is on LJ. I still have quite a few friends over there. I have a blogspot account but I need to figure out what the heck to use it for. And while I'm using Wordpress for my Star Trek group site, I'm mainly going to use that as a CMS and not so much as a blog (though I will use the blog functionality for news updates).
