What's your favourite health theory that the professionals have told the public?

I mean the things that spokespeople for various professional groups keep throwing out as new and groundbreaking from some study that came out, which then the media pick up and make a big deal out of something that is really old knowledge or not really that important.

My absolute hands down favourite:

A while ago doctors up here in Canada came out with a study on what could possibly prevent newborns from the improper forming of the spine. It turns out that pregnant women should either eat food high in folic acid content or take supplements. It was trumpeted around as a grand new discovery that would prevent this horrible condition that so many babies were being born with!
Funny enough, my mother told me that when she was pregnant some several decades before it was one of the first things her doctor made sure she was doing. How revolutionary.

How about "eat your greens".  or "Go outside and play. It's good for you"

I think mothers have been saying that since the beginning of time. Only now there are studies that say our mothers weren't nagging us just for the sake of it. This stuff is actually true!

I read one on a news blog recently (probably Blogging Baby) that reported how a recent study confims that teenagers like porn!

Imagine that.

That reminds me of the study I heard about a year or so ago that proved that animals seek pleasure.

Well, duh.

I think I remember hearing on the news that doctors had done a study that proved chocolate stimulated our pleasure centers.

I love that now since medical research is finally including people other than white men in test studies, all sorts of fascinating results are emerging revealing that men's and women's bodies are different!  And hey, people of different ethnicities have differences, too!

Granted, these studies are long overdue, and the results regarding differences in response to medications and rates of specific illnesses and conditions are very valuable. It's just the tone of the media reports that get me, as though the fact that people aren't all clones is somehow surprising.

Maybe 10 years ago doctors finally admitted that migraines could be tied with PMS...I had figured out that caffeine gave me a migraine (full on) with PMS almost a decade earlier.  but they wouldn't listen to me.  Since the solution was to stop caffeine, I solved the problem without them...

Scientists probably just assumed that there's a little white male in all of us...

Well I'm not going to resist - he's much larger than I am (not hard since I'm not quite 5'4") and not always in me.  Wink

Mine's a full foot taller than I am and black. No little white men involved at all.

Uh oh. Mine's about 5'3" and so pale that he burns if he looks at a picture of the sun. But he's out of town this weekend! Not even in the same area code!  Grin
