Tornado touches down in downtown Springfield. MA is in a state of emergency until midnight tonight.

Yep, I live there. No, I didn't get hit. But all of my employees got to see one head to my store before it veered off to destroy Wilbraham!

They're all landing west of here and the major storm complexes are to the south of us, but we still got "Whoa.  The light would be sepia-tinted, like, if it weren't red."

According to the radar all of the interestingly color-coded clouds are out over the Bay and the ocean at this point, so I think the damage has all been done.

I think the tornadoes are breeding. We had 2 touch down in California today, I think.

And tomorrow I get to start driving across country. In tornado season. >.>

A friend out in the Midwest (Minnesota?) drove through a tornado watch recently. Someone ticked someone off.

I drive in tornado watches all the time. Not doing so would mean entire days stuck in the house during late spring/early summer.

And if the warning comes on, you pull over and get out of the car.  Watch, big hairy deal. warning, head inside for a shelter.

Just don't pull over under an overpass - I've seen the aftermath; not pretty.

Right. According to most experts, You get out of the car (take the time to get off the road so you don't cause an accident) and either get in a sturdy building or if you are in the open, lie face down in the lowest spot you can find so you will be out of the way of blowing debris as much as possible. Underpasses normally aren't safe spots as the can make the debris problem worse.  The ditch by the side of the road is probably better.  Don't try to hide under the car either. Tornadoes have been known to carry cars hundreds of feet.

That's cool (not the tornadoes, that you live here too. I didn't think too many people on here were from Mass.)

We live right in the Valley where it touched down. Our neighborhood wasn't touched and none of the surrounding neighborhoods though. Some schools near here are destroyed though and many homes and cars. It was shocking, to say the least. Our whole downtown area is inaccessible because a major gas leak and some older buildings collapsing (not completely, but their roofs).

According to reports, two major neighborhoods in Springfield have been destroyed (the South End and portions of East Forest Park). East Longmeadow is without power, as is Wilbraham. My store is one of very few in the 16 Acres area that is up and running. It has been one crazy kind of a day!

I can say thankfully and happily that all family is accounted for, all friends are accounted for, and all of my employees and their families are safe. Phew!

I saw the aerial pictures of Monson.  Yeah, it's pretty bad there.  I'm glad everyone I know is safe and sound.  And that your store is still up and running.

I did, too. It was horrible. You should Google search for Cathedral high school. Gone.
