Where does this minor aspect of Amun-Re/Re-Horakti fit into your mythology? (Just curious.)

The Aten is the netjer of the disc of the sun.  (There's another netjer that's of the disc of the moon.)  I think technically It is sort of a meta-god.

(Also the god that I was most surprised to get a message from.)

You've heard from the Aten?

Yep.

I was going to sleep, and I saw It in my mind's eye, many hands extended like in the art and all.  It said, "You can only shine what you have."

And I sort of woke up and was all, "Whoa.  Never expected to hear from that."

I've always been kinda curious as to how Aten came to be. Did he always exist? Or did the (in some cases, forced) belief in him as a Netjer result in him spawning from Netjer (the One or what have you)*?

* Not entirely sure if this is a KO thought, or an actual ancient belief, in that there is a... unifying force of deity and it's called Netjer, and all Netjer are apart of it/come from it.

KO interpretation.  As I understand it, "netjer" basically means something like "divine power".  One can be numbered among the divine powers; one can also have divine power.  If one has enough divine power, one is/becomes/gets called a divine power.

I tend to parse it a lot like the Shinto concept of kami.

Well, the Aten was around long before Akenaten. Sooo.. I would say it's always been there, at least as long as the other gods of AE have been.

I personally have never worked with Aten. Nor do I do much with Ra, or any aspect of the sun. I suppose my general dislike of sunlight doesn't help.

I wouldn't mind contacting the Aten. I think it would be interesting.

This was why I asked. My general knowledge of Akhenaten and Aten was that Akhenaten created the cult of Aten, and that he (Aten) didn't exist before then. :S

It's my understanding that it/he? was around before Akhenaten, but that it became way more prominent when he took the throne. I think the Cult of Ra discusses it, and so might AE: Anatomy of a Civilization.

That is also my understanding.

There is another disc deity for the moon, but I can never remember its name.
