Facebook  can  only make  public what YOU  put  on it  in your  profile. If you  DO NOT put your  personal  information on there they  can not share it with anyone, if you  put your  phone  number and address in  your  profile well then  they can share it and it's your own fault for putting it there.   As far  as the  pictures go  well so what  if your  name is  linked to  your face, is it really so bad, in this  day and age of  identity theft ?

That could actually help reduce identity theft if your face is linked to your name.

The trick is, for people who have photos up other places - for example, the software now exists to match a photo of me at a Pagan event (where I use a different name) to my legal identity. That's problematic in a whole bunch of ways.

While I agree that Facebook can't release stuff it doesn't have, it's not quite that simple: if someone *else* posts stuff about you that you'd rather not have in that space, you don't have tons of recourse. That's always been somewhat true online, of course - but Facebook makes it trivially easy in a way that wasn't as true before, and for a lot of people who are relatively new to negotiating online interactions, understanding that people have different things they're private about, and how to talk about those things.
