Hello everyone!

I'm not personally Asatru (still in Seeker mode) but my roommate is sworn to Odin and has been occasionally teaching me a bit about Asatru here and there.

Next year, we're taking a trip to L'Anse Aux Meadows (the old Viking Colony in Newfoundland, Canada) and I was kind of hoping to surprise her with something cool. Since I don't really know how this works, please forgive my ignorance, but is there an observance/ritual/party sort of thing within the Asatru that is done to mark an achievement, or the end of a journey? This is a BIG trip for her, (a pilgrimage, you might say) as for another woman who will be joining us on the trip.

Ideally I would like to present her with a scroll with the ritual/observance/party requirements on it, plus whatever physical objects she may need. So far, the time of year will be late spring or early fall (off peak travel season). I don't know if that will affect anything.

Like I said, I'm walking into this blind, so any sources or info you could recommend would be thrilling and awesome!

Wow, color me jealous at your upcoming (for lack of a better term) 'pilgrimage' Smiley

To answer your question, truly any gift that is meaningful to both of you would be an appropriate marker for the end of the journey. Find something that speaks of your regard for your friend, possibly season appropriate. You may also consider holding a sumbel to mark the occasion so that you may all boast of your achievement and honor both the gods, those ancestors who came before, and yourselves for holding them in your hearts.

Sorry about the delay - my vacation started earlier than I expected, and I just got back into civilization. I had to look up "Sumbel" since I've never seen the word before. Sounds like a terrific plan. We have friends who make homemade, medieval style meads, which I can probably get my hands on and bring with me for the trip. Thanks so much for the direction!
