Randall explained it much better than I, and I totally agree with him. Sadly a number of programs can have these issues, but Adobe can be one of the worst. Doesn't mean however that you shouldn't use Adobe, or download other programs! Just make sure to scan your computer regularly (once a week is what I've seen recommended).

Also, be sure to let Adobe Reader and Flash check for updates and install new updates as soon as they ask you if you want to. This will minimize you exposure to security flaws in those programs. Also note that it usually isn't reader and flash that have malware but rather they have security flaws that allows hacked sites or hacked ads to install malware on your computer without telling you about it.

They said that the Amazon purchase was probably being blocked by my card's security due to the other charges, but if the other charges looked suspicious, why would those charges go through, but not Amazon? I don't get it.
About this bit, since I didn't see anyone else chime in (I've reading through a migraine induced haze though, so I apologize if I missed something) - My mother had this happen to her.  The person at her bank said that if they notice a lot of purchases that seem out of character, they can suspend the card until they can get in touch with the account holder and verify that the charges were legit.

While I was a bit creeped out by this when she told me - I don't want my bank paying attention to my 'spending habits' - in this case it looks like it did what it was designed to do: alerted you to the problem and possibly prevented the person who stole your cc# from doing even more damage.

I'm glad to hear you caught it so soon as were able to negate most of the damage.

Now I'm off to run a scan on my computer...

That's exactly what happened. I did receive a notice from my bank yesterday that was dated from the day before I called them.

Oh! I'm also a member of a credit reporting service. When I called them to notify them my card # was being changed, they did a check and sure enough, someone had used my card to open two new accounts. They ran it for a $1.00 charge, to be sure it was working, but then never ordered any reports. Apparently, that's  becoming pretty common as well.

Yep, everything seems to be under control now. Except now, I'm completely paranoid. In fact. earlier today I read an intro post that had a link. I thought it might have been to a blog or something, so I clicked it. It went to google, that's all. Now, that member seems to have been permanently banned and I'm hoping it wasn't something weird that's going to give me another virus. I'm sure it wasn't, but that's how I'm thinking now. Undecided
