I think they would be more likely to be found in large chain stores (f/x I've seen Rug Doctors at K-Mart).

I used to rent mine at either Kroger or Tom Thumb. I think Walgreen's had them, too. I know I've seen them here at Home Depot (not sure about Lowe's) because I nearly tripped on one going out the door one time. Smiley

I think I'll try this first.  What about using baking soda, salt and vinegar instead if I  can't find borax?

The borax works with the rest to effect the cleaning process. It doesn't work as well without that--I tried it once.

Around here, "Twenty-Mule-Team Borax" is in the laundry section of all the grocery stores AND WalMart.

Lowe's should have them. The one I worked at did anyway.

I was able to get dog urine out of the carpet with standard carpet cleaner (like OxyClean or something) plus vinegar and baking soda. Then I put shampoo on the carpet because... I don't actually know why, but I'll just assume I was trying to cover up the vinegar smell. The dog never peed in the house again after that.

In case it hasn't been said, avoid bleach/ammonia products at all cost. Cat urine is ammonia-based and using it as a cleaner on the floor is just one big signal of "PEE HERE!" to a cat. It's why vinegar is recommended as a cleaner, because it's acidic and cancels out the basic ammonia.

Thank you for letting me know.  I'm going to get some more vinegar after July 4th.
