John Henry at 32: 'Mean and Nasty As Ever'

John Henry is grumpy, in one of those "I don't care what you want, I'm not coming over" kind of moods.

So no matter how many times one of the greatest Thoroughbreds is offered a treat, he ignores it. Maybe he's not hungry. Maybe he sees a cameraman from the corner of his eye. Maybe he's just playing hard to get.

I had no idea this horse was still alive. Gods do I remember John Henry. What a horse.

I first met John almost 14 years ago, when I was a student at the Kentucky Horse Park.

John has a window in his stall to the office/feed room.  In the afternoons, he will stand at the window and wait until the feed bin is opened, then announce it to the rest of the barn.

One of the students turned John out into his paddock without his halter, as is the Western way.  Realizing her mistake, the student went out to put his halter on.  She didn't need stitches, but she did bleed.

John is a "cribber," one of those high-addicted horses that hang their upper teeth on a fence plank or anything, then lean back.  This apparently gives them an endorphin high.  John's upper incisors are nubs because of this.

And finally - the Park was having a miniature horse show.  A miniature stallion got loose and ran past John's paddock.  John went BERZERK, wanting to kill the little rodent!

And that's why we love him.  He will always be John.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Lyric.

Almost three and a half years.

My GODS where have the years gone?  The people?  The children?

I am humbled by the size of his memory in relation to my own recollection.
