I thought a lot about this one during my marriage (I didn't change my last name, which turned out to be a sane choice given the divorce), because I did periodically get people saying "No, really, what's your legal name?"

Grrrrrgh, some people.

Somewhere in my quote file is a line that goes something like, "My favorite answer to 'What's your name?' is 'That thing my parents gave me so they'd have something to shout when I got lost in the store.'"

Me, I only use the legal name when dealing with banks and blood relatives, these days, and the blood relatives only because I haven't figured out how to tactfully express the whole "I don't use the name you gave me" thing to my parents.

Which means that on the occasions that I run into someone who wants to do the legal-documentation name as a more relevant name to have than any of the ones I actually offer, we have major clash problems; if I wanted to use that name, I would be, damnit.

I run into a similar problem - I have a non-standard nickname to a non-standard name.  I usually go by Vieva - short for Genevieve.

People seem to get attached to my full name, sometimes, when they find out.  And they want to use *that*.

And, damn it, if I was going to use that name, I'd've given it!  I don't even RESPOND to Genevieve half the time.  I NEVER respond to Gen.  I made a deliberate choice to switch to that name .. I get very cranky when people view it as less-good than my "full" name.

Heck, there are still times I think I should've published under Vieva instead of Genevieve. Cheesy

And, to really confuse people, you should use your husband's last name with Vieva!  Cheesy

LOL, that's not what I meant anyhow, Shad.  Tongue

I meant when you write...use Vieva with his last name as your writing name. (Where's my rolly when I need it?)

And yes, I can tell the symbology horks you off!  Cheesy

Yeah, but that's not *my name*.  I haven't worked this hard to get my name on a book to then turn around and have *not my name*.

There'd have to be persuasive market research that a different name would be better.  and then I'd go with Elaine DuBois anyway, so there. Tongue

if they've given a "mundane" name, chances are they either don't have a magical name, or it isn't something they share.

Which would be me, since I don't have one, despite the part where I answer to varying forms of purple and witch (and my other online nickname) in offline situations - mostly because the family tend to slip and call me any and all of them, and the guys both have a habit of introducing me as the witch. Then again I also answer to several other names... that you don't need to hear Wink

A little OT and probably not any of my business, but how do you say that? VEE-va or Vee-EV-a? Or something even more "non-standard"?
