Pope OKs Latin mass, sparks Jewish concern
Old text says Jews are blind to Christian ‘truth,’ includes call for conversion

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI, in a decree issued on Saturday, authorised wider use of the old Latin mass and told the world’s 1.1 billion Roman Catholics that his nod to Church traditionalists was nothing to be afraid of.

I think it's a bit longer and fuller.

It remains to be seen what, if anything, this will do.

IIRC, this particular mass does have some real issues. I remember Koi talking about some of them, but the particulars escape me. I know I've got real problems with this Pope's motivations about a lot of stuff. Since I'm not Catholic, there's not much of my opinion that will matter, but I'm of the mind that he was a very bad selection and is bent on dragging that Church backwards.

I think a lot will depend on who uses the old mass. There seem to be two major groups who want it: Very old Catholics who grew up with it and do not like the new mass (allowing them to have it probably isn't going to do any harm especially since there numbers are ever-shrinking) and ultra-conservative Catholics who somehow think it is the original mass and that changing it is the end of the world. These folks are the ones I worry about. I don't like giving in to what are basically Catholic fundies.

Is this the old Tridentine Mass?  Or a different one completely?

It's the old Tridentine Mass -- as slightly modified in the early 1960s.

Ah, ok; I was just wondering.  Not that I know much about Catholic masses, or Catholocism even.  Smiley

I asked because I read an article about the Tridentine mass in our local (well, ok, local as in approx. 80 miles away) paper the other day and was curious if it was the same or a totally different one.

I'm not particularly impressed w/this pope, either, but, IIRC, there were a lotta worse choices at the time.  Besides, most of the possible selections from the 2nd and 3rd world would be doing the same thing, so I don't think there were probably many better choices.

See, and they wonder why the Church has been falling out of popularity in Europe.  I know that's far from the only reason, but I can't imagine it's not part of it.

Honestly, give it 50 years, and Catholicism may've all but disappeared in Europe, with nearly all the adherents in Latin America and Africa.
