Aside from the part where I like bad books - well some of them - what is the single worst book you've come across?

Of the few that I actually own now, I have to nominate The Little Giant Encycolpedia of Spells and Magic for pure wrong information.

Note from Randall: You can link to your book on Amazon if you know its ten-character ISBN like this:

[amazon=1234567890]Book Title[/amazon]

where 1234567890 is the ISBN

Hmm...SRW's Teen Witch tops my list. I have it buried in my closet...for when I need a laugh or need reassurance of how far I've come.

That's a hard question.  In Pagan books, I guess it would have to be Ann Moura's Origins of Modern Witchcraft. Very bad revisionist history and lots of hatred for religions other than the authors.

You know? For all the years I've known you (and that unhappily coincides with the publication of Moura's Origins), that book has been #1 on my Books Shitlist. It slides down to 2 or 3 periodically, but no pagan author has ever, pound for pound, written a broader based piece of shit than that book. It keeps coming back to head up the list. Amazing.

It has a lot of the two things we both really dislike: bad history presented as fact and far too much religious bigotry.

My pet peeve is Sister Moon's The Wiccaning.  Though published in 2001, it's not Pop Pagan NeoWicca, but old-school witchcrap, with an old-school "grandmother story" to go with it.

Ann Moura's Pagan??  Shocked  This is the same Ann Moura who has been in the news for taking on Bush, right?

Fiona Horne's Witch: A Magickal Journey is, hands down, the worst book I've ever read on the subject of Witchcraft. Besides the "Playboy'esque" photos in the book and the hideous pop-culture overtones throughout, this book is filled with misinformation. Witches having third nipples that grow in size based upon the strength of the Witch's magical powers. Using Microsoft Word to type out money spells in a green font. It's such a spooky, pop-Wicca book.

Mmh, hard question *g*

A german author called Thea - about as much a witch imnsho as a cow equals a ballet dancer.
'Met' her online and she makes SRW look an qualified expert.  Grin (Really SRW-Books are not the worst there is *g*)

And another german author, selling a book called 'White Magic' with spells in it as white as a moonless night in a deep hole.  Shocked

This is the same Ann Moura who has been in the news for taking on Bush, right?

The Ann Moura I'm talking about has this web site -- I saw no mentions of Bush conflicts there, but did see she has a new "history" book coming out.

I'll cast my vote for Barbara Walker's The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets.

Although that one's not at the very top of my list, it consistently occupies second or third place.

Seriously the worst has to be the Malleus Maleficarum the fifteenth century Catholic manual on how to identify and persecute witches.  Hugely popular in its day - it coincided with the invention of printing and a contribution to widespread fear and persecution.

Btw, thanks Randall - it never occurred to me that I could do that Smiley
