If you live in Dallas, TX most of you have heard about the cat collector who led the police on a high speed chase because he was taking a dying cat to the vet. If you haven't heard this wild story, here's links:

Texas Residents, please remember that man's Face and Name. Ron Teague. If you ever see him with an animal, please alert the local animal shelters that he's got animals and where you saw him.  He is banned from nearly all of the local shelters because of his behavior and the shelters try to keep tabs on where he is because of this. If he does have animals, there's little we can really do about it because most of this area doesn't have a city animal limit, but if we know where he is we can network with other shelters and Animal Control to figure out where he's getting his animals and put a stop to it. At this point, he's so restricted in shelters that will work with him or who don't know him that he's resorted to trapping neighborhood animals.  This means that wherever he lives, neighborhood animals will be at risk of being collected.  Eventually he will run out of options in the DFW area and then it's possible he may move out of the area to a new one where he is unknown.

Also please do not think he is benign just because he's a collector.  Do not confront this man. Last year the shelter I work with was still working with him on a very rigid schedule of when and how and what we would help him rescue.  We thought the counseling and boundaries was working to curb his desire to rescue so many.  But we were wrong.  He called us because he was going to spend some time in jail for some unnamed minor offence.  He asked us to rescue his animals.  We thought he was talking about 5-6 cats max.  It turned out to be around 19 cats and 9 dogs in a Budget Suite Hotel room.   Our shelter advised him that this would be the last time we would be able to work with him and that we had no choice but to put all of his animals up for adoption if we took them.  He agreed.  But once he was released from jail he demanded all of his animals back. When we wouldn't give them back, he threatened to burn our builing down as well as to hurt our shelter director. He never made good on either of those threats, but he did stalk our shelter for several months afterwards keeping just enough distance so that the police wouldn't do anything.  From these recent reports it looks like he's been making similar threats to his neighbors after being confronted about trapping their animals.

Ok, that's my PSA for the day.  Go hug your kitties and be thankful you have them.

That's just awful. I believe there was some woman like that in San Antonio a few years back. She had something like 40 cats in her house. She did try to take care of them, at least.

That's pathetically horrible if ya know what I mean. Puts me in mind of the lady who hoards rabbits, yes, I said rabbits, down around Portland, Oregon, someplace.

I need to search and see if I can find the information on it for ya.

I did hear about this. I have a family member who writes for a well known animal magazine, and according to him it is a disorder called "Animal Hoarding". Apparently the individuals can actually see themselves as "helping" the animals, sort of an animal "saviour". They usually have other extreme collecting habits as well.   Sad all the way around.  Sad

Yes.  She's correct.  Animal Hoarding is even now classified as a disease.  Unfortunately, he's also got other mental diseases which make him particularly volatile and at times violent.

And because he's actually convinced himself that he's helping these animals, I don't think he will get much of a punishment for it.  And really, the only reason I wish for him to be put away for al ong time is because he is violent and who knows when the next time won't end with empty threats.  He's a bit of a safety hazard to anyone who owns animals and Especially to anyone involved in animal rescue.
