The pet food recall was mainly off-brands

Ah. No. It really wasn't. Not unless you're considering Nutro and Eukanuba to be "off brands." A lot of high quality pet food manufacturer's were hit by this one.

I stand corrected. That recall did hit all across the board.

Yeah, it did. And that caused a whole lot of problems for those food lines, too. Sad

You are so right!

Dude, I could totally get used to hearing that.   Cheesy

And it is not just the toys.

All the "cheap products" are way less likely to be tested. Toxins are everywhere and no one cares until Marie Antoinette (the Mattel consumer) finds a toxin in her cake!

I'm not convinced the average person really gives too much of a damn.  In fact, the BP refinery up close to Gary in Indiana (not far from Chicago) is being permitted to continue dumping mercury into Lake Michigan (I wasn't even aware they were allowed to dump any; I mean, c'mon, people eat fish outta those waters!) for the next 5 years.  It's been on the news, but there hasn't really been the kinda public outcry there outta be.

Quote
<snip> Wal-Mart brand acetaminophen was recalled, Dollar Store toothpaste was recalled - and these are just the ones that were caught!

Yeh, I'm just glad I don't use much pain medication; whenever I buy meds (excluding Midol - some things you just gotta buy name brand), I buy the store brand.

Quote
The U.S. Gov. does NOT TEST imported products!  It is up to the manufacturers to do the testing. (The idea behind this is that no company would want to soil its reputation with tainted products)

The idea being that our government is chock fulla idiots and sociopaths.

Wake up America! The poor are once again getting the short end of the stick.

And most of my fellow poor people don't really care.  And a lotta my fellow poor people don't seem to understand what's at stake here.

Yep. Most people in general don't seem to care, I just don't understand that.  We have a couple of very polluted water sheds in my area and get this, the local gov. told people not to eat too many fish from those sites! Too many? How about none? (and they never stated just exactly how many = "too many" ) The worst thing is people trusted the warning such as it was and still go fishing out there.

As you said, it doesn't seem to be that people aren't aware, they just don't care.

See, I'm not sure if it's a blithe, ignorant unconcern, or just stupidity.  Or it may be the same thought process that leads people to take half a dozen ibuprofin in one sitting -- me big, pill little, me be okay.   Roll Eyes

A lot of pregnant women are still eating tuna (the morons), and WIC programs still list it on the vouchers!

As you said, it doesn't seem to be that people aren't aware, they just don't care.

A lot don't care... some though are afraid to care, or afraid to say they care and some just can't care. Based only on my experiences, that is. There was a time when I used to put my money where my mouth was, so to speak, about things, because I cared, and while sometimes it brought about good things, if only in getting other people to admit they cared/to care, it also drew me a lot of trouble. Publically and personally (though that's a whole other kettle of fish)

I've no idea where I was going with this, I just know it's been on my mind since yesterday. In my case it wasn't dumping in the lake, but (leaving out all the political stupidity we had going on) we also lived 20 miles from a nuclear processing plant, and there's nothing like growing up with instructions for what to do in case of a nuclear accident in front of you every day to make you aware of it's existence and the potential for problems if anything ever went wrong.

Anyway, I wanted to point out that sometimes it's not just 'don't care', it's 'can't' - at least it was for me. I just reached the point where I couldn't allow myself to care about stuff for a time because I no longer had the energy, or the sanity, to do so and daring to stand up and care had already almost cost me everything I didn't want to lose. (Yeah ok I lost it all anyway, but that's a different story lol)

On a different note...
I'm not convinced the average person really gives too much of a damn.

Nope, they don't - because too many people are more than happy to let the government and such do the thinking for them because it's easier, and because if it's not slapping them right in the face at this precise moment they don't see why they should worry about what might happen in the future or what is happening to someone else.

Same thing happened to Cindy Sheehan.  Total burn-out. The candle has to burn down sometime, you just hope there are others willing to keep the flame going.

Thanks for speaking out.

(Yes, I realize I don't know what it was you spoke out against, but what matters is that you did speak out, when you felt you had to. That takes guts.)

Wouldn't do to admit I had to go check who Cindy Sheehan was, would it?
don't thank me, though... stopping when I did is still one thing I do regret because I let myself be bullied out of doing something I knew was right just as we were beginning to actually be taken seriously. Long story Smiley

Dude, there's nothing wrong w/having times where you just can't bring yourself to give a shit (those are the days to skip the news in favor of extra cartoons, IME; esp. if said cartoon are an Invader Zim marathon  Cheesy ).

And there's nothing wrong w/being a misanthropic cynic; it's practically a requirement in this world if you have an IQ higher than mayonaise and an attention span longer than a goldfish.   Tongue

Good thing there's nothing wrong with that - I barely suppressed the urge to do bodily harm to a grown man a foot taller than me (and I'm not short lol) at the zoo a couple of hours ago. Would have been good stress relief - and he was a moron who obviously cannot read big signs saying "DO NOT.." do what he was doing.

Misanthropy is a way of life, and cynicism a philosophy that never fails to explain.   Cheesy

Apparently there's a second one on the way.

Second Mattel toy recall over lead paint coming
First warning affected nearly 1 million preschool products sold in U.S.

You know, you would think eventually we will learn not to buy crap from China, but alas profit before people

Also, something that strikes me as odd, the article said "excessive" lead paint...does that mean a little lead paint is ok? I dunno that strikes me as odd, I mean you would think that since we would have the ability to not ever need to use lead paint anymore why use even a little bit.

Yep, "a little" of just about everything is allowed - kind of makes you wonder doesn't it?
