The votes are in, and the winner of Challenge #1 (Summer) is:

Juni!

Congratulations Juni, and thanks to everyone who participated and created such great avatars!  Please feel free to adopt any of them now that the round is finished.  (Here's a link to the Challenge #1 thread.)  We'll be using Juni's theme idea, Books, for Challenge #2, which starts today and will end in one month on September 5.  Here are the revised rules:

Avatar Design Challenge Rules (Still Beta Version  Smiley)

 • Challenge begins today, August 5, 2007.  You do not have to "register" or otherwise state your intent to play, but it's nice if you do so so I can see what kind of response the theme is getting.

 • The challenge theme will be chosen by the winner of the previous round.  Juni won the last round, and selected Books as the theme for this challenge.

 • Players have one month to submit their design (i.e., until September 5).  Please submit your entries by uploading them to an image service such as Photobucket, and then inlining them into a reply to the challenge theme post (use ).  Also, post your idea for the next month's theme with your entry, so we can keep everything on schedule.

 • Multiple entries are permitted, but please mark one "preferred" entry, in case there are many entrants and the list gets too unwieldy.

 • Voting will take place between the end of the challenge and the beginning of the next round.  All interested members are encouraged to vote for their favorites.  The winner and new theme will be announced on the first day of the next round.

 • Please review the Avatar Guidelines and be sure your entry meets them.  Also, please do not use copyrighted images when making your entry, unless you have permission from the copyright holder.

 • By participating in the challenge, you are giving the other Full Members permission to use your entry as their avatar.  Please don't enter avatars that you don't want others to use.  Exception: you may enter your own personal avatar if it was made new for the contest.

Congratulations, Juni!  It's a really beautiful avatar.  Very Brighid-y.   Cheesy

If I didn't have a great one already, I'd definitely use it.  Wink

Congratulations, Juni.  You have a wonderful synergy of color and movement there.

Yay, early birds! Cheesy

One thing I do with my text, is to specify the size in pixels, rather than points.  Somehow that makes it seem clearer, at least to me.

Another thing you can do is make a copy of the text right behind the original text, but make the copy have a slightly higher stroke width.  Then tweak the color of the stroke until it's right between the textcolor and background color.  This'll smooth it a bit, which can make it easier to read.

Could someone zip up all the Challenge #1 entries and I'll add them to the pool for members to select from -- at least those not too large to be usable by all members.

Thank you. I'll try to get them uploaded tomorrow. I've been meaning to ask for them for a week and it just kept slipping what passes for the mind.

Just a reminder that entries are due in about one week, on September 5. Smiley  I'll be at my mom's house then, and she has horribly unreliable satellite internet, so the poll may be slightly delayed if it's down.  If you have a late entry and the poll isn't up, feel free to post it. Wink

And here's mine... (what else would I be doing mere hours before I fly back to the States? Cheesy)

I was looking on Wikiquote for inspiration, so the "portable magic" bit is from a quote they have attributed to Stephen King: "Books are uniquely portable magic."

The source image is here.
