The Yangtze River Dolphin, a beautiful and unusual animal--the "goddess of the Yangtze"--is now officially extinct, put in its grave by human environmental degradation.

There goes another people of this planet.
To be spirits forever.  Sad

But I have the strange feeling it's not them we should pity - it's mankind who lost another treasure and still is unaware of it.   Sad

Not such a strange feeling at all.

I remember getting into an argument once over why I would care about animals and stuff when there were people dying... because it's not that I don't care about people, but if we don't take care of the rest of it then there'll be nothing left worth the people living for.

I'm always reminded of the scene in the Dragonlance Trilogy (I think it's the twins trilogy) where Tasslehof goes forward in time and there's just... nothing.

I once got in a similar argument.  Most of the time I like animals more than I like people.  It's sad when any species of animal becomes extinct because of humans. <insert shaking head emoticon here>

YES! Agreed, that's what I feel too.
We loose the animals, we loose parts of our souls.

All is one. And that's not just a new age phrase, it is a mystery with much deeper meaning than most people ever could imagine.

I agree completely.  From a scientific standpoint, if one organism is removed from an environment than the entire ecosystem is effected.  That's why I think it's even sadder when a species goes extinct because of humans -- most of us don't know what the consequences of our actions are.

Without getting into the did he/didn't he of who first said this, though it's usually attributed to Chief Seattle, I was reminded of Tana's post while walking past the following quote at the zoo this morning. (Yes, we went to the zoo again Smiley )

What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of the spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.
