I came across this and thought of you creative types:

Announcing the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories Children’s Book Contest

Quote
Calling all aspiring children’s book authors! Are you looking to get published? Cheerios can help!

Cheerios is searching for the next great children’s book author. From now through Sept. 7, all previously unpublished adult authors are invited to submit their stories targeting children ages 4-8 to the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stores Children’s Book Contest.

Yeah I can see your point (because I read many a bad erotic story).  But still, a contest such as this would make publishing some of my books a lot easier.

Anybody want to give this creative type a topic? All the ones that I'd like to write are either a little too morbid, or a little too mature... Nothing raunchy, just not four to eight year-old approved.

I'm wondering how advanced they are going to allow these books to be... I could write a great story for a ten to twelve year-old...

This is why I think children's books authors have a harder job than other writers.  With my writing, adult content gets put in regardless.  The lowest rating I could manage is PG-13.  The idea of me writing something with a G rating is laughable.

someone asked me recently if I'd ever thought about writing children's books, like it was a good way to start off before writing *real* fiction.

I don't see HOW people can write children's books!  I'm certainly not good enough!  (too damn wordy!) Cheesy

I came across this and thought of you creative types:

Here's my idea...

No body filch it, tell me if it seems familiar... I'm scared there's already a story like this, but I don't remember if that's just me... Tell me if there is...

Introduction- Goes to school…
Problem- Gets picked on because Mom is a “witch”…
Rising Action- Starts seeing “people” who help him…
A boy helps him find a safe place to hide from the bullies…
When he gets lost in the grocery store and no one will help him, a man comes and shows him where his mother is…
He finds a puppy after the woman at the shelter won’t let them adopt a dog…
His mom can’t go on her date because no one will baby-sit him, she gets upset has a ritual to find them peace. He sneaks in then Mom’s friend, comes and takes him back upstairs tells him that it isn’t their fault. Tells them if the other people’s God told them to love everyone, they were the sinners. Teaches him a phrase to tell his mother when she’s upset.
Climax- He gets picked on again, is going to run away from the fight, then sees Mom’s friend in the window and tells the children off as well as the teacher who tries to get him in trouble.
Resolving Action- He goes to find the friend, the teacher’s say no one was there…
Conclusion- Tells his mother, she says she’s sorry he has to put up with it and starts to cry, he tells her. “Oh Mom, …” She recognizes the phrase, he tells her about her friend.

On the last page of the book there’s a picture of him sleeping with the friend watching him through the window…

I never heard of anything like that.  No offense, but I don't think that story would sell to mainstream publishers very well.  I know that certain Pagan publishers might take it (Llewellyn published fiction by SRW for example).  On the bright side, if you get it published at least it will get on the banned books list (free publicity).

I knew it wouldn't, but I didn't write it out for mainstream publishers. Cheerios is no longer part of the plan. But now that the idea has struck me I think I'll follow through with it. With the amount of Pagans starting to raise their own babies, there ought to be a book for their kids about standing up for themselves. Plus I know a lot who are single mothers, and a story about the mom being supported too would appeal to those readers.

Yay Single Moms!

Thanks! Thinking I just might take that Cheerios challenge!
Of course I have never won anything in my life, but who knows? Oh, wait, except I did win a can of tuna in a supermarket giveaway once. Smiley

I just want to point something out -- according to the rules, if you win, you have to sign over all rights to the story. Not just first publication rights, but all rights. If it is a hit and they make a movie out of it or something, you get nothing but the prize.

Hey, if they can make a full length movie out of a 500 word essay then they deserve all the rights -LOL!

I did read the fine print, but thanks for pointing that out to those who might not have. Smiley

Unlikely, I know. But I've heard of stranger things happening.

It's amazing how many people don't read the fine print on these types contests. The fine print here is relatively fair. I've seen some where you sign away all rights just by entering.
