My mother is one of those.  Does she realize it? NO.  It might be best if she did, then she could control it!

Suffice it to say, shielding is a very handy thing to have around my mother Wink

you know, I don't think the majority of the people who are like this DO realize what they are. I think they get... addicted to the high I guess you coul say, but I don't think they consciously understand what it is they're doing.

Good gods, I used to get migraines after a few hours around the old mom-inlaw! Now when I see her, it's like an episode of Star Trek going on in my head. Shields to full power! The Klingon approaches!!!

LOL!  It's the same with my ex mother in law! She can drain you in less than half an hour if you let her!  It must be a mother in law "thing".  I'm going to make a mental note of that so I don't do it when I'm a mother in law!!   Cool

LOL in my mother's defense, I truly think one of the reasons she is that way is because she is ill.  Since she isnt aware she is doing it, she isnt intentionally being mean.  However, her personality structure is such that she is inherently selfish in some ways.  She CAN be generous, but there is definitely a strong self centered streak going through her.    The thing is, when I take relatives to visit her, or anything, I have to shield them as well!  It is really sad, as she makes my daughter's stomach hurt almost instantaneously, and my grandmother gets worse when she is around her too much, unless I am shielding them.  People that are around my mother too much start getting sick, if they have any underlying health issues of their own.  If she were aware, she would realize she was taking too much from one individual, or I could teach her how to draw in energy better on her own through meditation and such, but I am having to teach her subtly, like teaching her meditation techniques in general.  I also try to keep her as healthy as possible.  Wink  I have hinted in the past, but subtletly has never been my mother's strong suit, so therefore she doesnt get it at ALL LOL.

I think it is survival for them. Some might know it, but others do not. Some just make you tired or exhausted, but some can actually be dangerous physically as Gina points out.

If you are in a weakened state or otherwise vulnerable and you sense there is something weird about a person, shield and you might also look into cutting any attachments if that is possible.

Be cautious as it can be more than just making you feel like you need a vitamin.

I have a mother-inlaw who behaves the same way.  It has been rough, wondering whether she is going to be on one of her high energy days or one of her energy sucking days.   I need to learn how to shield better, I am very sensitive to people like this.   Most people who are like this I just avoid, but unfortunately, I can't avoid family.

If anyone has any suggestions or info I could read for shielding against people like this let me know,  I'd appreciate it.  Smiley

This is a bit off topic, but.. Do you guys 'feel' your shields, or do you just visualize it and trust it is there?

Another thing I have noticed, the more close the mother-son connection, the more wicked they can be. Not saying all mom-inlaws are this way, but some. I wonder if it isn't a fear/jealousy type of emotion that fuels them. I mean in essence, you are the "other" woman in his life, doing the things she used to glory in doing as a mother for him. Maybe she's feeling like a queen who's throne has been usurped. Wouldn't it almost be an instinctual response to try and take back what you feel has been taken away? The more threatened they feel, the stronger they come at you, least that has been my experience in the past.

EEK! I remember the time my ex made the mistake os saying how much better he liked my lasagna than hers and that I should give her my recipe to try Shocked I would have much rather faced a pit viper that day than her, LOL Cheesy

Hey Rin

For me it depends on the shield I raise. The less intense I feel the threat is, the easier I am with the shielding, usually just a visualization of light surrounding me.

But if it's an intense situation, I pull out all the stops and draw up the energy through my body from the ground, then gather it at my center and visualize it like I'm a conducter of sorts, letting the energy flow through me then out and around me. I guess it would be along the same lines as grounding and centering, but I then take it a step further and use my center as a focal point that the energy will radiate from. I can also 'feel' when a shield like this starts to wane and I'll have to excuse myself, make a quick trip to the bathroom and do a quick recharge so I'm not using up my own energy to shield. The energizer bunny I ain't LOL Cheesy

Speaking of protection, any advice for an empath dealing with a family that doesn't know it projects WAY too much.  I get more bombarded by emotions at home than out in public!

I usually just trust in the protection of the Gods and spirits, it is when I ask for extra protection that I feel it.

Speaking of protection, any advice for an empath dealing with a family that doesn't know it projects WAY too much.  I get more bombarded by emotions at home than out in public!

Learning good basic shielding techniques helps - exactly how you might go about this will vary with your preference/path/etc. I usually go not so much keeping stuff out, but turning the volume down on what comes through.

(I do more of this at work: I work in a high school, lots of rampaging emotional stuff and stress), but I've also done it when living in dorms, or with housemates.)

Beyond that, three basic useful things.

1) Ward or otherwise heavily filter whatever personal space is yours. In some cases, that may be your bed. In some cases, your room, or your room plus bathroom. Whatever is just yours. I've found a separate set of ongoing filtering/shielding (especially something like a bed, where we spend a lot of time), helps a lot in keeping me from overloading when I'm living in close contact with others.

Some people do this by casting a circle (or doing the equivalent sort of thing) every night before they go to bed. Some people do the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP). Some people set up wards around the specific space. Some people do things with stones. There are lots of variables: the basic goal is creating a 'quiet' space for you to be in.

2) It's worth using some kind of psychic hygiene technique. Again, there are tons out there.

I'm fond of either using a cleansing visualisation in the shower and 'seeing' all of everyone else's gunk running down the drain or - my preference (I'm a bath taker by strong preference) throwing a little salt (I prefer sea salt, but any kind will do) in the bathtub and doing the same thing. (Salt is generally considered a strong psychic cleanser.)

The LBRP also works here. Grounding and centering techniques work. Incense can help. Many other techniques, etc.

Most people are unlikely to need to do more than something very simple/quick most days: I ground and center multiple times each day, mostly very quickly, and do a longer run through or more deliberate step maybe 2-3 times a week. (That number goes up around times like just before vacation, prom, or exams, when I'm getting more stuff thrown at me at work)

3) Some people also find wearing a pendant or other piece of jewelry (often charged for a particular thing, like helping you filter out what you don't need to be distracted by, etc.) helps.
