This is actually a question from a friend of mine, but I'm intrigued. And clueless. So, I thought there might be some environmental experts here who might have input.
Can anyone point me to "learned" opinions on the environmental impact of paper from sustainable forests versus recycled paper. It has come to my attention that paper from sustainable Eucalyptus forest (in the tropics) has become both easy and cheap to acquire while 100% post consumer paper is more difficult to find, more expensive, and lower in quality.
It would totally depend on how the paper was processed. Do they use environemntal damaging chemicals to whiten it, etc. And, to get an accurate understanding, you would have to factor in the environmental impact of the transportation of the paper and it's components. So I don't have an answer, but by looking at the labels they might tell you if bio-friendly bleaching is done, and you can look at how far the wood and paper have travelled to get a guessimate of the diference there.
And if quality is a big issue, then go for the sustainable, because it should be better than the standard paper n a big way.....
