I don't know about their for profit businesses but their Deseret Industries is non-profit.

well varios places on the web keep mentioning that the Mormon church does run some for-profit stuff, real estate and so on, and pays their taxes on it and everything.  LEftovers from originally being the main capital in the area.

Zerynthia, it does sound like we had similar experiences at SM though you articulated the cons much better than I did.  I also had the same thoughts about them using a free service then charging such a high monthly fee to so many students.  But even at that I might have stayed if the forums were more intellectual and less chit chat.

Randall, Don't ask me why they didn't ordain you themselves.  They made it sound like it was some legal reason.

I did enjoy the online rituals.  They did not beat attending a ritual in person but when I got busy I found them an acceptable substitute.  Are there any free open rituals online that anyone thinks is good?

People are welcome to run some in our chat room (or on the MUX) if they want to.  We did so years ago when we were on DelphiForums.

But even at that I might have stayed if the forums were more intellectual and less chit chat.

At first, I would have stuck around and been more involved if everything wasn't so "lite". Believe me, I tried desperately to start some real conversations - but I was lucky to get a response or two.

However, I had some very long phone conversations with Lady Raven which left a really, really bad taste in my mouth so to speak. There were some things that she said which made me deeply uncomfortable, but were unable to articulate until a dear friend and mentor reminded me of Isaac Bonewits' Advanced Bonewits Cult Danger Evaluation Frame. If you substitute "sexual manipulation" with "social manipulation" - it has the Sacred Mists written all over it.

I did enjoy the online rituals.  They did not beat attending a ritual in person but when I got busy I found them an acceptable substitute.

I felt that the Litha and Samhain rituals were the best - everything else was too short. Pretty soon, I wasn't feeling much of anything at the rituals - they were short and lacking in any real energy being raised. But when it was good, it was pretty good.

I felt they did some of the ritual backwards. I thought it was strange that they released the quarters before the Gods & Goddesses. Also, people were so rude during the rituals - busily typing their "responses" during the ritual despite being repeatedly asked to wait to type their responses until asked.

Merry meet dears!

I wanted to thank you all for bringing this discussion to the boards.  While some people feel their experience with Sacred Mists is beneficial, not all people do, and that is to be expected in such a large group.  We do our best to meet the needs of all, but it is a challenge, I can tell you!

We are not perfect by any means, and these types of discussions serve to point out where we can improve, so they are very welcome!  When students leave Sacred Mists we do ask them to let us know how their experience affected them so we can make improvements, but few actually do so.  Perhaps it is more difficult to express disappointment directly, or perhaps it's a timing issue.

However, even finding these discussions elsewhere is helpful, as the information still applies whether it is given directly to us upon request or posted somewhere else on the web, (as long as we see it, of course).

I appreciate the information posted by our two former students on this thread... we have reviewed these concerns and have already made some improvements, most notably the introduction of required Journal Keeping!   This was a direct result of the comments made on this thread so I wanted to be sure and give appreciation for your venue opportunity.

Just on a side note:  Lady Raven is NOT Grandmother Toad.  Cheesy

Sending you all warm blessings with a hope for continued open communication that benefits all in the Pagan Community.

No one had the courage to ask me directly why I left the Sacred Mists. I was only asked if something had happened or someone had said something that made me want to leave. I realize the difference is a subtle one, but from conversations with Lady Raven, it was clear that I could give any reason, but people were going to reach their own conclusions.

This may or may not be true. The point is Grandmother Toad (a pseudonym) in typical troll/sockpuppet fashion, misrepresented her relationship and involvement with the Sacred Mists in Juvenall Wilson's blog. Grandmother Toad has a regular column in the school's newsletter. Additionally, the newsletter's editor has posted that Grandmother Toad is an active member of the SM college and community. This is clearly in direct contradiction with her post on the blog.
