I'm of the school that thinks good wood is its own decoration, so about all I'd be likely to suggest is sanding and oiling.
That's how my main staff, eucalyptus, is finished. Well, mostly. I used a butane torch first to create a thin layer of char on the outside surface (ok, why did I feel the need to specify the
outside?). I then sanded it down so that it has streaks of pale wood showing through the black and oiled it with linseed oil. From there I've sewn a leather grip to it and added a leather 'sock' to the top to hold a crystal. This staff
really doesn't like the idea/image of having anything carved into it. It even reacted negatively to the thought of brass nails when I wanted to put a leather footer on it. Oddly enough, it didn't mind the torch at all...
