I thought about getting some gold paint and trying something like that. Would it work well you think?
I don't see why not. Essentially you're just using 'colorant' to 'dye' the epoxy. I suspect that you'll have to experiment with the ratios of paint-to-epoxy. I figure that the paint being a liquid, and having some sort of base itself (whether oil, alcohol or water), it'll change the consistency of the epoxy differently than the chalk pastels will. You might actually have better luck with glitter or something akin to it.
I get the idea you're going for here: a kind of gold inlay. I've been wracking my brains trying to think of some sort of powder that would give you better results. I can think of other mediums than pastels: Rit clothing dyes, tempura paints, cake decorating powders... and while I have some vague memory of a gold powder (other than the real thing) I can't think of anything that would give you a liquid gold consistency for this application.
Ah! Got it! If I recall correctly, it's a finely ground gold powder used in faux finishing. I remember seeing back when I worked in an art supply shop. As that was years ago I have no idea who the supplier was but at least it's an idea to work with.
