I have a pretty good garden going now, even though we have only lived here a year. If I was not so lazy, I would post some pix, maybe I will take the time and try to figger it out later on, but anyway, I have a dead spot that I swear to god only kills plants. I have tried all the usual garden magick that I do (which basically involves singing and shiny rocks charged to help things grow, and raising lots of Gaia energy, and acting in accord and all like that) and still-everything dies. What gives? It is a very warm spot near a fence, and everything to the immediate left and right of this three foot or so area is going great guns. It has gotten the same as every other spot in the garden, there are tons of fae back there  and all good things, but still. wtf? Does my garden need an exorcism? All experience and advice appreciated.

I'm not a botanist, though we've got some serious plant people around here, but I think before I took off into the realms of exorcism I would take a sample of dirt in to the local ag commissioner and ask him to run some soil tests. My guess is you've got some sort of long term problem there that is making its presence known.

I guess that could be, but the area surrounding it is fine. it is just one spot. And this house was haunted as heck when we got it, and continues to attract all kinds of stuff, both wonderful and not so wonderful. But you are probably right, it is most likely something yucky got dumped there a while back. harumph.

I think that as boring as it may seem, this is probably the best route to start with.

I would also wonder if a local animal is using just that spot as a potty.

What happens to the plants in that area? That is, how do they die?

Like others who have replied, I'd check fr mundane causes before looking into exorcisms or the like.

My guess is that something was dumped there. Do weeds grow in that spot? Along a fence is a common area that people use herbicides to keep weeds from growing. Some are soil sterilizers and in a normal dose can last a year or more. Perhaps that particular spot got a heavy dose.

If that's the case, digging up the area and replacing the soil will help. Also, try turning some compost into the soil this fall to prepare for next year.

they start off ok, I have a fuschia there that was doing great and then kind of keeled over. I have tried seeding things, but even yarrow, which is endemic here and hardy as heck won't grow in that one spot. Even weeds have a hard time there.

Here is something not commonly known; I found it out by accident---noticing some huge 'dead zones' in the yard of a local beekeeper, who usually has a very verdant garden, I asked about the areas where everything was dead.  It seems some corn syrup solution such as he uses to feed bees was spilled there...and nothing will grow where this has happened for as much as a year or two.  So your spill might have been something as seemingly benign as a busted bottle of syrup or a batch of discarded hummingbird food.  Sugar apparently kills plants.

Just another addition to the "weird but mundane" list. Undecided

That is extremely peculiar. We have quite a few hummers around now, and I think the person who lived here before me was heavy into butterflies, so spilled something or another is not unlikely. And there have been kids with sodas running around in that yard since the turn of the century, so god knows...

I'm gonna bounce this totally off the wall way, way out in left field but why does that spot have to grow plants?  Why not plant (yes, pun intended!  Cheesy) a birdbath or small stone patio with a bench on it or something that way in that spot?

well, it is a narrow shallow spot, against a fence. But you know, a birdbath is a great idea. Or a gazing ball...oh boy:)

Sounds to me like you're now considering planting other things there, huh?  Cheesy

It's always good to keep an open mind, no? Wink

dh wants to put a raised bed there, which would probably be ok.
