The first thing to spring to my mind is has the accuracy of how they weigh this sample increased?
I mean, I would really wonder if it NEVER was quite perfectly a kilo?  And now, they can weigh to such a perfection that they caught the disparity they didn't know existed.

I always thought that 1 Kg was equal to the mass of 1 litre of water, which was equal to 1000 cubic centimetres. Maybe they just need to remaster the reference block?
