My plan is to attach the hose into the shower in such a way that it can be pulled out of the way, but not completely out, so if it's forgotten she just has a dirty shower and not a flood.  The machine itself is new and shouldn't flood for any other reason, I don't think.

You might also check places like Old House Web and others that deal with some of the peculiarities of living in an old house and bringing in modern conveniences. There might be some other measure you can take that will help and not make laundry impossible for your grandmother.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.  Now that I know it's not an emergency, I want to take the time to plan and do it properly.
