People are influenced by gossip about others, even when it contradicts what they see with their own eyes, suggests a new study.

Here we see the power of propaganda

Sadly, it is very powerful. People seem to want to believe stuff, especially bad stuff, about others, even when everything they know about the person tells them its unlikely to contain much truth.

although apparently good gossip trumped a bad record too.

I suspect bad gossip actually spreads around more than good gossip meaning more people likely get exposed to bad gossip in real life.

that's quite true, if you don't like a store you tell more people than if you do like a store, but in this case, I think the gossip was staged to be more even.

*shrug* What people *say* happened is every bit as important, and often trumps, what *actually* happened, as any folklorist could have told them.  It's interesting to see it playing out under laboratory conditions, though.

I think what people really like is to be contrary.  If the established opinion is that so-and-so is a right sone of a bitch, you will always get one or two that say 'Oh, but if you really knew him....'  These are the same people who delight in discovering/telling about the flaws of a saint.  All you have to do to bring them out is make a definitive statement either praising or denigrating a third party.

I see something like this playing out in the Gods you love/fear or whatever thread.  Mention a god with a dark rep and you will get people telling you all about their little-known sweet side, or telling you their UPG about how the myths misrepresent them.

I think this contrariness is part of human nature.  It may even be an instinct to 'round out' a story, see it from other sides, rather than a simple desire to stand out as 'different' from the herd.

Ha.  That's what I'm doing.  It's not that I'm so sweet-natured that I always try to think the best of people, because I most certainly am not; I'm a quick-tempered, often cranky, old (well, middle-aged) bat with a streak of cynicism.  Nope, the reason I can almost always find something both positive and true to say about someone is because I'm a contrarian (as befits a devotee of the Chaotic Canine).

(Okay, being a sworn enemy of inaccuracy comes into it... but being contrary is what makes it fun.)
