It's not enough for U.S. Republican presidential candidates to be conservatives. They've got to be bigger and better conservatives to win the hearts of right-wing America.

While Republican candidates need right-wing votes to win the nomination, their support has a downside when candidates need to move to the center of the political spectrum to win the general election

This bode very badly for the Republican Party in general, and it would appear that they know it

I think, too, the GOP had better take the threat of some powerful religious right people seriously when they say they won't vote for Guliani and will support a third party candidate instead.

So you either split the vote, or field a candidate who has, at best, a slim chance of winning a general election

And if that happens they will learn their lesson when the Dems win.

What has totally blown me away is that Huckabee isn't doing better. He has the credentials that the social conservatives look for, but he's not gotten any traction. He always struck me as one of the more prinicpaled candidates in the field, too.

Brownback has been one of Pat Robertson's inner circle for some time, and he isn't doing at all well, either

But aren't willing to do anything about it. Worse, most of them aren't that conservative in the "traditional" (e.g. Barry Goldwater) sense. I sometimes doubt the modern Republican party would know a true conservative if one were running.

But aren't willing to do anything about it.

On one hand, they have Pat Robertson telling them over and over that his people represent the views of the vast majority of Americans
On the other hand, they have the poll numbers telling them that he's full of it

My mom is always saying he's gone senile.  Given that every year he makes predictions of natural disasters in areas he deems "sinful" (a few years ago he said a tsunami would hit the west coast).  Some of the comments he made about Katrina being God's way of punishing the sinful New Orleans and the call for the assassination of the leader of that country I can't remember at the moment seem to support this.

Then again all fundies are probably insane to begin with Undecided

I don't think they are insane so much as they are people who do not cope well with change (either in religion or in life) or complex situations where there are more shades of gray than black or white. They need things not to change to be happy. Fundamentalist Christianity gives about as close as they can get to an unchanging worldview and it is a worldview that is starkly black/white with all shades of gray banished.

Why did He burn the churches down
