Hey, folks,
I was wondering if anyone here used portable applications from a usb device along the lines of what can be found at these sites: PortableApps.com and Pendrives.com?

A definition of a PortableApp can be found here: What is a portable app?

Specifically, I'm looking for a firewall.  There's an open network connection that I'm trying to secure without installing apps on the local computers themselves.  I have an anti-virus app via ClamWin but would really like a firewall to assist in securing the connection.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't think I've seen any (useful) windows firewalls that could work as a portable app. To work in Windows, a firewall needs to install itself into the (driver-level or better) guts of Windows.  That requires an installation and reboot.

Thats kinda the impression I'm getting.  I'll have to see if maybe I can do an install of ZoneAlarm  or Comodo on one of the computers.  The network is just completely open with nothing along the lines of security other than the windows firewall.  On a wireless network over a cable connection that's just asking for trouble.

I must say, I found ZoneAlarm to be a complete pest, and so did my spouse (who is a network tech and does tech support - I mention this only because he used to work in a computer shop for about a decade and it was one of the programs that caused a lot of his customers to need him).  I've been using Comodo which is also free, and so far the only bug was when I updated Firefox and Comodo choked to death on it (ultimately my spouse decided to re-add Firefox as a trusted application, which of course I was too frustrated to think of doing).
