 An Evangelical Rethink on Divorce?

On questions relating to the Bible's treatment of family and morals, one might expect assurance, if not rigidity, from Evangelical Christianity. So, it may surprise many to learn how "live" the topic of divorce remains in Evangelical circles. Last month, the cover story of the monthly Christianity Today was titled "When to Separate What God has Joined: A Closer Reading on the Bible on Divorce." The heated controversy provoked by the story showed how Biblically flexible some Evangelicals can be - especially when God's word seems at odds not just with modern American behavior, but also with simple human kindness.

Very interesting, and depending upon how you view thing, an interesting take on how 'fudge', weasle', 'rewrite', or what ever term want.  For me it is immaterial, but I'm heading for LA. Monday to see my sis-in-law.  She rails agaist the Batist chures there allowing marriages of divorsed persons.  Other that that she is rather reasonable in her beliefs.

Yeah, people who believe in the inerrancy of Christian scripture will always find ways to use those texts to justify anything they want, and then turn around and condemn others for being 'less' Christian. It doesn't matter whether you're talking about slavery 150 years ago, or divorce today.

Right-wing extremists often make a fortune from the exploitation of workers living in deplorable conditions, and the poisoning of the environment in many countries which lack effective pollution control enforcement. But as long as they can console themselves with the notion that "God hates fags", they can wear their religion on their sleeve and impress their neighbors with their 'holiness'.
