Some 18-year old in southern Finland went on a shooting spree at his high school yesterday then shot himself (later dying from his wounds). Eight people (most students) dead. According to this article on CNN the teen had real problems having described himself as "a cynical existentialist, anti-human humanist, anti-social social-Darwinist, realistic idealist and god-like atheist" on his YouTube site and also said: "I am prepared to fight and die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection."

aside from the actual anti social tendencies of most social darwinists, most of the rest appear to be like calling oneself an anti Jesus Christian.  Too badcrazy web postings can't be used against you when you apply for a gun license.

Give it time; courts already use people's MySpace pages against them.  Lotsa people who've been through a custody battle tell ya' to clear up your MySpace, FaceBook, and anything else of that ilk before going into court for any reason.

Btw, is this the 1st school shooting incident outside the US?

Not to mention people who aren't students who go into schools and shoot the hell out of kids there.

Ah.  I've never been sure if it's just a US thing (in the 1st world, anyway), or if things like that happening in other countries are just not reported here.  You'd think they'd be mentioned, if only because it would make our country look a little less crazy by comparison.

It's not just a US thing. But I sometimes wonder just how US-centric US news is, from conversations with friends who live in the States.

Besides there are 'crazy' (the only polite word I have just now) people everywhere, and even school shootings aren't new. Can I say dunblane?
I'm wondering how long before it moves from stabbing to shooting here....

Ridiculously so.  Honestly, the only reason I know anything at all about other countries is because I listen to my local NPR affiliate a lot.  Like, most of the time I'm at work, and in the car, so long as it's before the damn 5 hour jazz set  Roll Eyes .  I can't tell you how grateful I am to have come across NPR, which I hadn't even heard of at the time; it was just a lucky accident.  I suspect pretty much the only Americans following the French presidential election were NPR listeners, f'ex, and on top of that, thanks to NPR, I can kinda pronounce Sarkozy.  Grin

I heart SciFri!

I'm waiting for suicide bombings in schools here.  It'll happen, it's just a question of when and where.

Thanks for posting the link! It's very useful to me as well.
This just seems to be another horribly tragic event that always leaves you wondering 'why?'
I was driving somewhere in NMexico LATE last night 2-3 am? and saw a short news clip but thought at the time that it was another shooting HERE.  I had on XM radio but CNN/Fox was not reporting it so I flipped it back to Coast to Coast Radio but even their newsbreaks didn't report on it...   Right now I'm smack in the middle of Kansas and thank gods the internet is working!

We've had two highschool shootings last month here, there have been a few shootings (though they're rare due to the gun control here), and I recall one or two shootings in Germany.

School shootings are actually relatively rare in the US as well given the huge number of schools and students we have.

They're the kind of thing that is actually pretty rare - but always makes news so they seem more common than they are - although one is still one too many.

I think I want off this ride too.

Shootings in high schools, stabbings in junior high......

One thing I like, is that our local cable community access TV channel has a service called SCOLA. It shows news programs from around the world.

France2 TV news conveniently comes with subtitles, so I can understand. The Segoline Royal vs. Nicolas Sarkozy contest was fascinating, and the French news gives you other stuff you won't see elsewhere.

BBC America is another good remedy for people sick of what passes for news in the USA.

My wife and I used to have DishNetwork, until a beautiful maple tree in our backyard blocked the line-of-sight to one of the satellites. We live on the edge of a small swamp, surrounded by tall trees. Once the trees come into leaf, its plays havoc with signal strength. Remounting the dish elsewhere wasn't an option, either.

I'm jealous. Most Americans think of Al-Jazeera as an Al-Qaeda tool, but I used to know people (on the Internet) from that part of the world who explained otherwise. They said that Arab kings and dictators hate Al-Jazeera because it exposes their corruption and greed.
