1) Im confident that stories of orgies pre-dates Wicca by a fair while.  In fact I suspect it might be a medievil concept.

Stories of sexual orgies and sacrificing infants seem to be common to beliefs about minority religions. As I recall the Romans told such stories about Christians (and other small, unpopular sects). The Jews were accused of such both during the middle ages. Etc.

Along with cannibalism/ variants thereof, I recall.

First off, I just want to state I don't see anything wrong with Dionysos, BUT I believe orgies in their sexual form or not (I'm talking about wild rituals etc.) were around even in his time, and were actually part of his worship.

I dont know where you thought you'd give off the impression you didn't like Dionysus.

In any case, I was talking about instances where people erroneously assumed wild orgies and so forth.

Depends how you define morals.

Usually the classic Christian definition, ie no sex before or outside of marriage, and for fundies, i guess that includes same-gender sex.

I know you probably weren't being serious, but still, here's some Thelemic examples I know of.

And I think Crowley describes various sex magics in Magick Without Tears.

This sounds crazy but is anybody here a secret Pagan.

When I say this I mean, the parents do not know!

My parents would throw one if they only knew, but probably not half as much as the my Mums brothers family. They are strict Creationist Christians who will not wear make-up or watch Tv on Sundays. How on Earth can I ever tell them I am a Pagan?

Have any people on here come across such problems. I daren't hardly go to the Winter Solstice celebration in case anybody finds out!

Help!

Annabelle

Hi, new here. Firstly how did this thread go from keeping your religion a secret to sex rituals?
Anyway, in reply to the initial topic, I think a better approach to 'coming out' to your parents is to just simply not mention it until some one asks you about your religion. This is what I did, that way my close friends at school know my about my beliefs. That way you know that if some one asks what religion you are then it implies that they are ready to accept that you may be a different religion to them. Apart from that, if your parents are as fundamental as you say I think that it would probably be wise to leave them in the dark until you are independent enough to get away. However no matter what, if you do tell them I think they should get over it... Their your parents! One of my closest friends is a born again Christian (and very fundamental) after several discussions with him on the subject of religion we became very even closer friends from sarcastialy trying to convert each other

Welcome to The Cauldron, Just Me!
Thread drift happens, it usually isn't a big deal, although it's encouraged to start a new thread if it looks like the drift calls for it's own thread.

I beleive its best to be secret about your religion to avoide conflict with others. But its ok to talk to someone about it who has looked into paganism properly and not just the christian way of seeing it.

Some think we have some sex rituals...

I was under the impression that some pagan religions/pratices DO include sex/orgy rituals...? I've heard that (some?) Wiccan covens include them, as well as various other paganistic practices.
Also, sex and/or masturbation is seen by (many? some? at least a few) as being a very effective way of raising energy for use in spells and the like. (It's listed as a possible way of charging sigils on various sites detailing their creation.)

On topic, hehe; I'm not actually pagan per se, but no, my parents don't know about my spiritual beliefs, including magic, etc. My mom does know that I was at least at one time "into it", because she used to let me read her Ravenwolf books. (So if I wantd to I could blame her for me being a fuzzy when I was younger...heh, just kidding.) But I doubt she knows the exact extent of my beliefs and so forth, as I haven't told her. My stepdad...eh, let's not go there. His family... let's not go there either. His sister once sat me down and berated my mother to me because I guess they "found out" she was into witchcraft. (Probably because my aunt is a nosy hmhmhm... and found the Silver books.) Telling me all kinds of stuff like my mom was going to burn in hell and so forth. Which makes no sense because although their family is Catholic, they don't go to church or anything. Oh well.
My grandma is very spiritual and such. I think she knows I'm very interested in magical things, but again, as I haven't told her I doubt she knows the exact extent of my beliefs.
My friends mostly know, they don't care. Exception being my friend Carly, who is also interested in paganism and magic and so forth, and her older brother Rob who's a high priest in some pagan faith or other. Other people at my school don't know, because I haven't told them and I don't think it's their business anyway.

Well I'm not really a secret pagan nor am I  a public one either. My parents know that I'm pagan and they accept it. They kind of consider it's my business and don't show much interest beyond that. I just had to explain them a couple of times what exactly I am and what does it mean. That was it. They are both Lutheran Christians and I was raised as one too but we never were highly religious. Religion never played much of a role in our life. Just sometimes we went to a church concert during Christmas and we also had to go to mess with school class every year, twice. It's a tradition. Though those who didn't belong to the church were allowed to skip it.

My mom and my granny both seem to have firm belief in Ouija boards. They have done the whole spiritism thing and some unexplainable things have happened...though they have a slight fearful attitude towards it, along respect. My granny has done some card readings and been accurate and she has met a fortuneteller that told things that eventually did happen. So she definitely believes in such. And my great granny, her mother, has experienced some unusual things too which involve so called "blood freezers" (people who could stop the bleeding from serious injuries by using the creation words of the thing that caused the wound, or the creation words of blood, this concept is based on Finnish folklore where spells were based on the creation words of substances allowing you to control some properties if you knew the correct words) and a boy with a silver mirror. Mom has also had some experiences with ghosts/spirits.

Anyways, I don't really talk about my beliefs and religion. Especially with pals. Religion just comes up very rarely and even then I might just state I do not believe in the Christian god per sae and that I'm an agnostic. That's about it. Only reason I might skip my pagan celebrations is that I feel I can't concentrate with mom at home. If she's out, I can do my thing.
