Is anyone in the Mid-west having mice problems this year? I normal only have a few mice get into the house the whole season but I’ve had to deal with over a dozen so far. I’m wondering if we’re going to have a particularly cold winter this year and the little guys are running for cover. Also, does anyone know of a way to discourage them from entering my house? If the smell of two cats doesn’t tell them not to come in then I really have no idea what to do!  Shocked

I haven't had issues (Minnesota, but it's only just started getting down to significantly cold temps for the season)

I had one mouse just after I moved this summer, but I haven't seen any since. The cat batted it around a lot until it was stunned, and I could catch it in tupperware. I then let it out outside, and told it to go tell all its mousie friends that there was a cat, and not to go there. It seems to have worked!

There's an article from one of our papers about mouse prevention, with some suggestions: http://www.startribune.com/397/story/1462237.html

First thing to do is go outside and block every entrance hole you can. And remember if there's even an inch open, they can get in. Mice/rats are able to go through incredibly small holes. If you've got tree branches rubbing up against the house, cut those back if you can. They can jump, but no reason to give them a sidewalk to the roof.

Also, you may end up having to kill them. I wouldn't use poison when we had problems here because of the risk of secondary poisoning to a cat or dog if they eat the mouse. I used the regular mouse traps that you bait. I told Randall that if it came down to killing them, I wanted it fast. No sticky traps or anything like that.

Take a look online. There are websites devoted to this problem. A lot of them are from exterminators, but a whole bunch aren't.

And good luck!
