I does doesn't it?  I think that archaeologists have only scratched the surface.

Yeah, they have.  The area innundated and buried by ash as compared to what's been excavated already is tiny. 

Unfortunately, since people have rebuilt on top of those ancient cities, we may never know. Which, perhaps, is how it should be.
