A friend in Merrie Olde emailed me a link about this.  Apparently the Irish National Roads Authority (NRA) is destroying archaeological sites in order to build a road in the vicinity of Tara, the ancient site of the crowning of the kings of Ireland.

There are options for donating (through PayPal.  Blech) on that site, and a list of other places to get more information.

I would love to hear a truly neutral POV on this. The Irish government seems to be saying these sites aren't important and there are many like them all over Ireland. The opponents are claiming they are unique and must be preserved. A neutral study, not paid for/controlled by either side would be interesting. If they truly are unique or even just rare, they should be preserved. If they are common, the case for preserving them becomes much weaker.

Randall,

I agree.  The site I linked to (run, of course, by the opposition) seems to be the best bet -- they're raising funds to bring in an independent archaeological team from not-Ireland.  Smiley

Granted they'll still be funded by a group with an agenda, but they'll hopefully be less biased than the other team.

I would hope so. I've gotten cynical about studies funded by one side or the other -- too many years of living in the US where studies, like everything else seemed to be designed to support whatever those funding the study want to hear.  Sad
