Merry meet,

my teacher has presented me with a challenge.. in the book i am reading ( the encyclopedia of natural magic, by John Michael Greer) the author explains the planetary correspondences and how they apply to magick. HOWEVER, it fails to make any mention of the planets Neptune and Uranus.

Can anybody please explain why???

No expert there either, but does it mention Pluto then?

Maybe it only mentions the planets you can see with bare eyes because they have a longer tradition in magic? I don't know, but that would be my first guess.

I'm sorry I have no answer but it is not just that book which leaves out the last two or three depending on how you feel about Pluto. I have read several books which leave them out. I too would like to know why. Anyway welcome. I am only about 60 miles from Laval. I really love Montreal and go there as often as I can. Just south of the border we are.

If it is based on old ceremonial magic, than uranus and neptune weren't featured.  No Pluto either.  I would guess that during the time period the planets were used in ceremonial works, Neptune etc were not known of.  that's just my guess though.

You are going to find a lot more correspondances for the inner planets because people have been aware of them for much, much longer.  Therefore, we've had much more time to figure out their influences.  (Or to make stuff up, depending on one's opinion of astrology.)  Information on the outer 3 is always scarce.  No mention at all is kinda surprising, though.

If you want to find out more about them, you could start by look at the zodiac signs of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.  As I recall, they're ruled by Uranus, Neptune and Pluto respectively, so that might give you an idea of the character of the planets themselves.

They weren't visible to the unaided eye.  Uranus wasn't even discovered until 1781 and was called the Georgium Sidus by its discoverer, after his patron King George III and was called Herschel by just about everyone else (after its discoverer). It wasn't officially named Uranus until about 1850. Neptune and Pluto were discovered even later.

   Greetings,

May i suggest that those planets take so very long to complete an orbit of the Sun, that their influences would be for generations, or even civilizations .  Remember that it takes 30 years for a Saturn return. Jupiter takes much longer that one persons lifetime to complete a circuit of the heavens.  Neptune and Uranus are even further out.
  Just my thoughts.

  Blessings, Mea.

Ok folks here it is... word for word

and i quote:

but let me take your attention on a little details mention:
yes ,their orbit is VERY long , therefore no immediate results.
BUT:
let me trow another question at you:
i think there is a relation with those two planets and what ever may have happen to Avalon , or to Atlantis for that matter.
it would be nice to see if they were in correlation with the mist called by the lady of the lake to push Avalon out of the Christian's sight..
i think there is.
but you are the expert , not me.
so once in a VERY long while , i think it is possible to incorporate those two in a VERY POWERFUL spell...
a spell that may have an impact on an entire civilization...and entire era...

end quote.

any thoughts at all because i'm at a loss for words!!!

Blessed be!

my response, for what it's worth:

crazy dude.  Get a new teacher.

Then again, stuff about Atlantis pretty much always makes me think they're off smoking the pixie dust.

I'm with Shadow.  You need a teacher who grasps the fact that Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote fiction, not history.

My thoughts. Take that statement with a very large dose of salt.

I think your teacher made a whole lot of stuff up at random.  S/he apparently decided that the lack of reference to outer planets had nothing to do with history etc, so came up with some random line instead.
