Some friends of mine at uni lived witha  guy whose only alcoholic drink was coke and vodka.  One time they switched his vodka bottle for an identical bottle full of water.  Guy still got drunk.

It is actually a fairly common reaction.  Psychology researchers have conducted several studies in which participants believed they were drinking alcohol, and the participants began acting drunk and reported symptoms like those of people drinking alcohol.  Mindset goes a long way towards loosening inhibitions.
