Anyone know anything more about the PhD guy who teaches surfing in Hawaii and snowboarding in Tahoe?

He has come up with what MAY be the Grand Unifying Theory. No strings, no complicated dimensions, he worked out what appears to be sound mathematical support for his theory. He has unified the 4 forces (including gravity!) by use of the newly finished Lei E8 lattice. He calls it "An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything".

No GUT No Glory

"By mapping known subatomic particles, plus 20 imaginary ones, onto the 248 points of the E8 lattice, and then rotating the lattice in a computer model, Lisi shows how the particles elegantly combine to form three of the four forces.
The imaginary ones combine to form gravity, for which subatomic particles have only been theorized."

I know very little about Lei E8, but I admit I'd just love it if a CA surfer dude solved the GUT. It's just a great image, splashing around, looking at the sky and waves atop his board, thinking of how the universe works... just too fun.

I'm VERY skeptical as I see some basic math problems and other issues.  Many of my reasons are summed up here (along with some that are well beyond me as this is written by a physicist in the field and I'm a dabbler).

Thanks Randall! Been at a fair last few days, just got over to the blog. Dr Pilsen throughly trashes Lisi, and has thrown down several good objections.

The tone of his blog is so angry, however, he appears furious that someone who hardly understands what he did at 14 could possibly come up with a GUT. There is some real ego flailing around (it seems to me) in the blog, but the objections Pilsen has appear to me (at least in as much as I can understand) are sound questions and hold as deserving explanation.

I'm going to be watching this one, as Dr Lisi is getting some support from others in the field, but more a few others are raising all sorts of questions/objections. There be throwing chalk at each other next! If nothing else, Dr Lisi has got people investigating another direction, which I do not think is a bad thing.

I almost did not link to that blog because the tone was a bit more ad hominen than it needed to be, but that blog entry had most of the major objections/problems with the actual hypothesis that I've seen all listed in one place, so I bit the bullet and linked to it.

Ah, I see. It seems to me that if Dr Lisi is such an idiot as Dr Pilsen claims, he wouldn't be worth taking the trouble to mention. The fact the theory has upset Dr Pilsen so mush makes me feel there MAY be something to it, maybe, and with a whole lot more questions answered. I am very skeptical as well, at this point, but it's interesting.

My major "problem" with it (aside from the weird math which even I noticed when I read the paper) is that it is yet another theory based on some strange symmetry. There have been a number of these in the past and they never worked out. I'm not sure why he thinks this one will fare any different. This doesn't mean it won't, of course.
