Hey all,

Just wanted to throw one of my musings out there... What do you think is the purpose of life? Is there a purpose? I am particularly referring to human life here.

So, in a nutshell: what do you think we are here for?

Humanity as a whole?  Me personally?

I think humanity exists because evolution went that way.  I think that BECAUSE we exist and are part of the Divine, we have a ... hrm.  goal/desire/purpose to explore and understand ourselves and the world around us and improve the Divine as we can.

Me personally?  I'm here to do the best I can and make my own purpose.  (And then ROCK IT OUT!)

Yes, I did mean both humanity as a whole and then on an individual basis.

I agree with you that we have a purpose to understand ourselves and the world: my personal goal is knowledge. Not necessarily because knowledge is power, but because knowledge can be enlightening.

(And perhaps 'rocking it out' should be on everybody's to-do list!)

I tend to believe that we are here because there was a desire to be here.  I don't like to get into creation/evolution/myths what have you...I wasn't there...I can't verify it...so I try to focus on other things.

A purpose to life...I think that we are here to allivate pain...to experience bliss as best we can...and move on.

On my cynical days, I would say: "For some, it is to serve as a warning to others.  For the rest of us it is to grow old, die and ultimately be forgotten."

On my non-cynical days, well I have no non-cynical days so I have no clue how I would respond.

Humanity is here because that's how evolution worked out and each person... well they're not really here for any reason beyond the reason that Humanity is here. However, they can give reason to their lives, they simply get to choose what it is. Everybody has a reason to live, a lot of people never find it, they just need to act on it. To quote Mahatma Gandhi "A man who won't die for something is not fit to live" and I believe that that thing one will die for is the reason one lives. Though in all honesty I also accept that this is my idealistic optimist side that believes this and there are plenty of folks out there who's 'reason to live' is at most buried very very deep. So I frequently revert to the 'no reason' argument.

Big picture? I think humans and other life forms were created because life, creation, the will to make something is just unstoppable. Life always wins, always keeps going in some form or another. When I'm feeling sentimental, I liken why the gods made us to why I want to eventually make my own kids.

On a personal level, I think I'm here to experience this form of existence. No reason other than that. However, part of this experience, if I want to do it right, is to help others and make their trip a little more enjoyable and, as HeartShadow put it, to help them ROCK IT OUT! Cheesy

I don't believe there is any purpose in life.  We can try and come up with our own purpose in life, but the universe isn't going to validate anyone's philosophy.

Sometimes I think we are the "brain cells" of the Gaia "creature". Sometimes I think the Creator wanted someone to share in the awe of creation.

Other times I agree with Terry Pratchett's philosopher, Didactylos, whose alternate hypothesis is: "Things just happen. What the hell."

42 works for me too.

So, in a nutshell: what do you think we are here for?

Meaning and meaningfulness only exist in the interaction of intelligent minds with an environment; there's no innate meaning to anything.  Thus, the concept of "Being here for a reason" is either nonsense (from an objective perspective) or something a particular intelligent mind has assigned to particular stuff.

I don't see any particular reason to look for it.

This is a long-winded way of saying, "I agree with EverFool."

Humanity: Evolution, I suppose. I don't really think it is something I need to worry about.

Why *I* am here: People can think and rationalize and philosophize, so we come up with elaborate schemes and religions for validating our existance. In the end, I'm not so sure it really matters... but having something to believe does pass the time, I suppose. ha. I think I am personally on this earth to experience life and have some fun. Basically. Cheesy
