I have read a few articles about TM originally starting out as an Earth Goddess somehow associated with Anna, but I am not sure if that is reliable?  Would anyone like to set me straight on this?

There are some theories kicking around that Morrigan is actually a title for the goddess Anu, who is generally associated with the earth (though I'd hesitate to call her an "Earth goddess"). I'm pretty sure The Guises of the Morrigan by Rankine & #$#$#$#$ covers it, but I'll have to go check.

There's a page in the book dedicated to the association; it quotes the Books of Lecan and Leinster respectively:

"The Morrigan... and it is from her other name "Danu" the Paps of Ana in Luchair are named, as well as the Tuatha De Danann."

"Badb and Macha and Anu, i.e. the Morrigan, from whom the Paps of Anu in Luachair are named, were the three daughters of Emmas the witch."

A lot of the equation of the two comes from equation of Anu and Danu, which not everyone ascribes to. There's no definitive proof either way, to the best of my knowledge. As far as my own UPG goes, Danu and the Morrigan are very much different deities; I've not attempted tcontact with Anu. But ymmv.

Agreed. I was thinking that maybe The Morrighan could be associated with the darker side of nature?  Nature is not all 'love and light'...

My take would be that the earth connection has to do with sovereignty and kingship.

I'm also seeing Aine as yet another aspect of The Morrighan...Seems as though people link TM to whomever they want...

Same here. I actually think that Danu is Morrigan's grandmother (Morrigan is daughter of Ernmas, Ernmas is daughter of Danu) if I remember correctly.

My take would be that the earth connection has to do with sovereignty and kingship.

And fertility.

Definitely. It's one of the more annoying things about modern Paganism.

It's like the whole 'eclectic/pick and choose' aspect of Paganism which has so many advantages has been taken slightly too far.

I agree with this. I don't believe (UPG) that Anu And Danu are the same. Anu is an Irish Goddess and Danu is just about pan-European. There are those who say that Anu was changes to Danu by scholars as books were copied etc others say not.

One of the problems is that there are so many names that are similar and can easily be altered in copying.

It is Possible that Anu and The Morrigan are the same especially if the translation of her name as Great Queen is correct - and the association of the Great Queen with the land and sovereignty.

It's not correct, though; the fada over the o in her name is modern. With the fada, the beginning would translate as 'great', but without it, it translates roughly as 'phantom'.

The Guises of the Morrigan by Rankine & #$#$#$#$ lists 34 other deities as other historical "manifestations" of TM.

Aside from that, I've heard it is a really good book and have considered purchasing it.

I like it. And as far as the 34 manifestations go, the writers don't say "these are other deities that are also Her." It's more like, "these are other deities that some people think are also Her, and this is where they probably got it from."

Of course - I have read that somewhere  Smiley
