We do have a little more in the way of thread-managing ability now, though.  Perhaps we staffers could keep a little more of an eye out for dups and merge or close threads where appropriate?

Personally, I think this is more trouble than it is worth to do much more than we do now. It's one of those things where the solution is more trouble than the problem.

Quote
We do get some duplication between the "Basics" area and the Full Member areas because someone will see a thread out in Full Member territory (like, say, one about what we're reading now--this one was duplicated when we first moved over to SMF, I think) and start it up in the Basics area so that they can post on the subject.

And all allowing such necessary dups while making a major effort (aka more than we do now) trying to merge others is likely to do is confuse members.

There is also the fact that we do have a dual-chat system.  I think the MUX has been great for some people (I love it myself, and wish I ever had a chance to hang out there anymore), but it's also a really foreign environment for a lot of people, so they don't ever go there.

We used to have a very simple java mud client that would automatically take people to the MUX. However, due to the security limitations of Java applets, that became impossible when Bob had to move the MUX server to another machine. (The applets can only connect to a MUX running on the same machine).  Having to set some program up and manually connect puts off a lot of people who just want to try the MUX.  This is one of those "can't do much about it" things, however.

Good points.  Like I said, didn't know if what I was saying was going to be useful, just throwing thoughts out.

I don't think it's just the problem of having to install a client, though.  The whole way the MUX works, regardless of how one connects to it, is really different from what a lot of people are used to and really different from what a lot of people think of when they think "chat".  (And again, I'm not sure what to suggest here, I'm just clarifying my earlier point.)

I've added the Bookmarks SMF Mod.  You can "Add Bookmark" to a thread you'd like to be able to find easily (on the blue bar on the page with the messages in that thread).  You can list your Bookmarks from the "Marks" menu item in the top blue menu.  This is experimental in that it appears to work but has not been tested much.

Great! I will have to try it out! Smiley

Finally, I want more chats.

While this will not directly help with that, I updated that Flashchat Integration mod today.  The new version modifies the chat button in the top menu (when it thinks members are in chat) to list the number of people in chat. Note that people who don't log out of chat aor the board may remember listed as "in chat" for hours after they have left, but this is better than nothing.

oh dear, I'm an idiot. I have never even noticed the chat thing, went up to see what it was, I have no interest in chatting, ever, and I can't figger out how to log myself out. Bleh.

It's not only time for our Annual Donation Drive, it's time for our annual "suggestion drive" when we open a topic and request your suggestions for how TC (the forum, the web site, the MUX, forum rules, etc.) could be improved. We make no promises to implement suggestions, but the Hosts and staff do look at and consider them all.  (And have implemented a number of suggestions over the last ten years).

Again, I don't know if this can be done, but it would be great if you could tell when someone has quoted you.

I, like so many others, post all around and when a topic goes in a direction I'm not too keen on, I don't keep checking back. Sometimes I've been quoted and didn't realize it.

It looks to me like you are wanting to know when someone has replied to a message you wrote. Unfortunately this is impossible under SMF (and on all other "drill down" boards I'm familiar with) because they do not track to which member a given message is to (as DelphiForums and Beehive boards do). Replies are made to a thread from the board software's point of view, not to an individual message written by a particular member. Sad

no we don't. (hides his snack tray behind his back and hopes noone notices the crisps and sarnies

I suspect this is a matter of being separated by a common language; what is a sarnie?

Thought it might be something like that. Ah, well.

That is another thing I miss about Beehive. (whine whine)  Even if the person didn't reply, you could see that they had read your post, and when.  I found that a very useful feature and have missed it terribly on this software.  Among all the other things I miss. Cheesy
