And what's the status of women in India?  It's not exactly unheard of for women to be sold off, or for girls to be given to old men.  It was the British that put a stop to widows being immolated upon their husbands' funeral pyre.

It's late, so I'm only going to answer the easy one now.  India, at least 10 years ago, still had a problem with sutte and killing of women.  Difference between them and other countries in the region is that the govt had made it illegal years before and punished people.

But it was the British who put serious legal crackdowns in place to begin with.  That may in fact be part of the reason they still had problems with sati so long after the legal change; because it was imposed upon them, primarily from the outside by a frankly exploitative colonial power.

"Is no one inspired by our present picture of the universe? Our poets do not write about it; our artists do not try to portray this remarkable thing. The value of science remains unsung by singers: you are reduced to hearing not a song or poem, but an evening lecture about it. This is not yet a scientific age."
