What symbols do you guys use to represent Brighid? The flame and Brighid's Cross are fairly obvious, but what of others?

I'm asking, actually, because I have plans (if all works out) for re-working a cabinet I have into a shrine for Her. I want to paint a large Brighid's cross on the front, with other Celtic symbols around it (now if only I can get what's in my head onto paper and, paint).

I think the sun would not be out of place, nor a cauldron. You could put serpents there too, if you like.

Hmm...sun is something to think about, but it really doesn't say "Brighid" to me. I have thought about it before. The cauldron and serpents are a good idea. I don't think that the cauldron would fit with my design idea, but the serpents have real possibility to fit well with my design. I might well find some Celtic knotwork serpents. (My book that I have here doesn't have any unfortunately).

What is Brighid's tie to serpents? I have seen it before...but I don't quite understand it even though it seems to "fit".

As Finn says, the sun is a common symbol for Brighid.  In fact, Brighid's cross is thought by wome archeologists to be a solar symbol.

The triskele is sometimes used as a Brighid symbol, because of its similarlity to Brighid's cross and because it represents 3, and Brighid is a triple goddess.

Flames of any type are good, as is water.  She is associated with a number of wells in Ireland.

As the goddess of smithcraft, healing, and poetry/wisdom, any symbol associated with any of those areas would be appropriate.

I have read that snakes are associated with Brighid, but I can't quite remember why.  I'll look it up for you when I get home.  (I'm out of town for work right now.)

She is also associated with cows, sheep, and beer.

Maybe THAT is why I have that triskele ring that I always wear when I'm not working!!

I'm still considering that sun. I think the reason it doesn't say "Brighid" to me is because it says "Cernnunnos" more...and Cernnunnos was in my life first, so the sun is definitely "his" in my mind.

I'm thinking I may adapt the flames/water similar to the design I did for your tattoo. Smiley

I was thinking of incorporating a horseshoe in there somewhere.

Oh, and oak trees.

Kildare, where the perpetual fire was said to be tended for and by Brighid, means Church of the Oak.

Oh, and oak trees.

Oak LEAVES!!!

Oh, I'm getting really excited about this project! Now I only hope that the paint I have in my basement will work, and that I can find a place to put the stuff currently occupying the cabinet I want to use.

Brighid has already made it clear that She wants the blue stoneware bowl I made a year or so ago. I agreed, I don't have any other use for it, anyway. So that's going on there. I don't know what else, but I'm sure I'll find things.

Oh, yes.  She likes blue.  Ask Purplewitch if you don't believe me.

I wear a lot of blue for Her.

Blue is my favorite color. I love blue. This is kind of a green blue teal, different colors, really pretty. Smiley

What is Brighid's tie to serpents? I have seen it before...but I don't quite understand it even though it seems to "fit".

Mostly folklore: there's a variety of verses connecting Brighid (or Her Day) with emerging serpents:

"On the day of Bride of the white hills
The noble queen will come from the knoll,
I will not molest the noble queen,
Nor will the noble queen molest me."

And

"The Feast Day of the Bride,
The daughterof Ivor shall come from the knoll,
I will not touch the daughter of Ivor,
Nor shall she harm me.

On the Feast Day of Bride,
The head will come off the 'caiteanach,'
The daughter of Ivor will corne from the knoll
With tuneful whistling.

The serpent will come from the hole
On the brown Day of Bride,
Though there should be three feet of snow
On the flat surface of the ground."

And:

"This is the day of Bride,
The queen will come from the mound,
I will not touch the queen,
Nor will the queen touch me."

Also associated with this was the odd Scottish custom of pounding a "serpent" (sometimes a chunk of peat in a sock) while saying the charm.

There are other theories, too, based on scattered iconography, associating snakes with healing and healing wells and a number of other Celtic healing deities are depicted with snakes, most notably on the continent, though the water-snake imagery is also strong in Ireland.

Hehe. Me, too. Reminds me of that quote attributed to St. Brigid, about how she'd like to give God a lake of beer so everyone in heaven could drink eternally...
