Reality 101

There is a class that I would love to teach some day.

I believe that it would be more useful that any number of courses on spirituality, or ritual writing, or divination.

I would call that class "Reality 101."

I am sure that most of us have met candidates for this class. You can find them in any large gatherings of Pagans. They are usually the smiling ones standing next to the people that look rather frustrated. That look of frustration comes from trying to convince someone that it is possible to be grounded in this reality and still have a spiritual life.

I have noted several groups of people that I feel could benefit from a Reality 101 class:

It must be time for sleep.  I kept seeing that as a menu item:  Half Demon Bread on an Old Board.

What kind of sandwich would you make with Half Demon Bread? Perhaps you could take it with you as you wonder the grey mists...

I know a nice sandwich recipe.  But seeing as how it involves a certain ingredient, I will not describe it.  Half Demon Bread is baked at the same place as those delicious cookies.

Guys,

I know the subject lends itself to some degree of silliness, but I think we might be getting a little far off-track here for a) a serious discussion thread, and b) a special topic thread.  Wink  If we could sort of nudge the discussion back to the subject of the article, I'd appreciate it.  Smiley

Thanks!

Oh yes my god does this class need taught.  I admit I needed this a couple of years ago (when I believed everything Mamma $ilver said was true) but I grew up: the fact that you can't solve your personal universe with spells and magic etc. If life worked like that every one would be a pagan and we would all be rich, beautiful, successful, intelligent people aka the offspring of Angelina Jolie and Albert Einstein.

Some of my ex friends couldn't grow out of the fluffy bunny phase.  The thing that was most exasperating is that though they claimed to be open minded, anything that they disagreed with, they brutally attacked.

It’s the hypocrites and being bigoted that annoys me when dealing with such people.  Its ok for them to attack Christians (some of my friends even defended the notion that it would be ok for pagans to vandalise and destroy churches) because they have attacked “us” e.g. the witch burnings (which a) the catholic church has apologised for and b) most of the deaths where Christians not witches).  Not to mention that no one should be punished for the crimes of our ancestors.

It’s annoying the prevalence that some of these people have and is what has turned me off associating with a lot of pagans in the past.  I think most of these people don’t necessarily practise the religion just use it as a vehicle for martyrdom and superiority.  The most fun thing about people on pedestals is watching them fall off.

It really annoys me and this has kind of ended up as an outburst but how can any pagan religion be treated by others seriously when a substantial amount of people are so divorced from reality. Some just kick back and put all responsibility on God/Spirit/What ever deity they follow.  That can lead to a whole bag of monsters, kind of like the example used of children of free spirited parents.

A point that just occurred to me was how can any one deluded practise any kind of paganism? I define paganism as any type of religion that is Earth based/nature worship (I apologise for the poor definition).  How can some one follow a religion that is very much grounded in this reality ignoring how the “real” world works, and not even be in it?  Generally Mother Nature kills of those lacking in basic common sense Tongue

Some hard truths to be swallowed me thinks.

Sorry for the rant!
